2000 Land Rover Discovery - Drive Shaft

Greetings!
I just joined today. Have a quick question.
Shelby, my Discovery has been shaking violently lately. Very violently. Feels like the engine is going to drop out and any second. Took her to my mechanic and he said it was the transfer case. I was at a stand still about whether to fix her up, or just go buy another one.
Mulled it over for a week and on Monday morning she gave out and I heard a loud metal snapping noise. Got it towed back to my place and looked underneath and saw a long metal cylinder thing hanging from underneath. Got it towed to my mechanic and he's saying that's what it is as well. Of course before it went out it cracked my transmission. Any advice? How much do drive shafts cost? Can I use other year drive shafts in my car? The crack in the transmission isn't bad at all, my mechanic suspects that if we fix the drive shaft (which I know fell out at my place after it had been towed - I can't seem to find it anywhere.. ugh) Shelby should be just fine. Any experience with this?
Help.
Newbie,
GirlB

First, find a new mechanic that knows your car better, if you can find one. Where are you located?
That problem was almost certainly the driveshaft the entire time. At this point I would recommend buying a new one. There are at probably half a dozen different places that sell them, and everyone has their own opinion. Tom Woods, Great Basin Rovers, etc. Someone recently post a GREAT price on a new one from some place near Little Rock, AR. I rebuilt mine, so I haven't bought a new one yet, so I won't offer a recommendation.
I hope your transmission is fine.... but you may have to look into getting a replacement.
Also it's best to provide year, make, model, miles, etc when asking for help. Just so we know exactly what we are talking about.

Order a new shaft off one of the sites jafir recommended,
http://www.greatbasinrovers.com/cs_drivetrain_driveshaft.html#reardriveshaft (I recommend these guys)
Tom Wood's Custom Drive Shafts - Tom Woods Custom Drive Shafts Custom Driveshafts Specialist
When it comes in, have your mechanic remove the old one and replace it with the new one. It's a brainless job, the new shaft is already balanced so all the mechanic has to do is lift the truck up and unbolt, remove, install, rebolt (8 bolts). DO not let him charge you more than 50 dollars. It will take him all of 30 minutes...also tell him to torq the bolts back on with 35 lbf. ft.
Your in Atlanta? Sucks wish you were in Charlotte or I would do it for a case of beer.![Big Grin](https://landroverforums.com/forum/images/smilies/lxvR5hR.png)
How fast were you going when it broke?
