2000 Land-Rover Discovery II TD5, weird engine behaviour.

So I'm new to this forum, and I already have a problem that needs solving
My Discovery has this weird problem, I was driving to the shopping centre and everything was fine. But when I stopped at the gate of my house, the engine sounded very strange and it was like the whole engine was shaking a bit. I could even feel the shaking in the van itself. So I thought it may be overheating but the gauge wasn't showing it, so I opened the water tank and there was still a lot of water so it wasn't overheating. But it sounds almost as if its overheating, so then I went for another drive to see if the problem is still there, I drove about 15km's with no problems at all, but then it started with the shacking and overheating noise. There was also a loss of power. So I serviced the van (changed oil and all filters) and went for another drive, and again, after about 15km's it starts with the shaking and overheating noise. What could be causing this? The van drives like a dream but then all of the sudden it starts with the shaking and overheating noise.
(I don't know how to describe the sound but the closest is probably a overheating noise)

Without fault codes it's hard to know where to begin. You can have the codes read at most auto part stores for free. Once you have the codes it's easier. I suggest you buy a scanner that can read all the codes in your Disco, such as EMS, ABS and SRS. It's the best investment you will ever do if you intend to keep your Disco and troubleshoot it yourself.

Make sure you change the fuel filter. Could be buggered up with water in it.
Make sure the air filter is not plugged. Diesels want all the air they can get.
Put some of that stuff in the diesel fuel tank that soaks up water in the fuel.

Sounds strange. The TD5 is not particularly prone to overheating if properly maintained. I suggest it needs a good service with filter changes. The biggest problem with all alloy head diesels is cracking due to age and compression stresses. It could also be a defective injector. How many miles has it done? When was it last serviced with complete filter changes? There is another issue with defective injector harnesses allowing oil to seep along them by capillary action to the ECU. When you say an 'overheating problem' what leads you to conclude this or exactly what noise do you hear? Does it sound like a waterfall 'trickling or sploshing' noise in the heater area? I run a TD5 from new now with 121K miles and never experienced any engine issues, electronics, yes, engine, no. Can you post a bit more data on the year, mileage, servicing, repairs done etc so we can get a feel for the problem. Do you still run an EGR valve and a DPF type exhaust downpipe?

Also put 200mls of good quality 2 stroke bike oil in the fuel tank the next time you fill up, it helps lube the system throughout - not recommended for V8's though.

Its a 2000 model, with 275 752 kilos. I did service the van and changed the diesel filter, oil filter and air filter (This was two days ago, when it started with the shaking motion, while your driving it runs smoothly but I noticed it loses a lot of power, if you keep the pedal flat it seems to slowly build up power again. If you stop at a robot or so, you can feel it shaking like its the idelling that's out. You can actually feel it shaking your body. I also thought maybe it needed a service but it still does the same thing) . If the engine is cold when you drive away it does not do this, once you drive a few km and the engine warms up, then only, if you stop it has that rocking motion. The only problem it had was that I sent it in to have a new alternator put in. It was parked for about a year because a mechanic told me it needs a new gearbox and i did not have the funds for that, so one day a friend had a look at it and said its the alternator not the gearbox, i put a new alternator in and then it was fine. The guy I bought the filters from at the spares shop, said it could be a coil pack that's causing this. What is a coil pack and where is it located? Could this be the problem or something else?
