Default 2001 DII with 2003K. Rebuild, crate engine, or say good bye?

Hi all,

I have a 2001 DII that I want to drive for the next 10 years. Bought it "new" at 78,000.

I will follow the post instructions on the recommended 60,000 mile service, but I've got a problem (don't we all?):

I have a loud clicking noise that sounds to me like a lifter/valve issue. Also a coolant leak. I am contemplating a new engine (crate) or a rebuild.

I am a fairly good weekend mechanic, with basic tools. I have never done a rebuild but would like to try.

The question is: after 200K plus as a daily driver with almost zero problems, how much life is left in this thing? It is tight everywhere. Even all of the electric works, of course not the cd changer.

Any and all opinions would be valuable.

Cheers,
MinneOkie

You need to think smart to determine what is currently wrong with the engine, both the tick and the coolant leak. Sounds like you have not even starting tracking down the leak or the tick yet.
I would be glad to walk you throw what to do and test, PM me your number and I'll call you.

A tick is not a big deal. If valves are ticking a bit - does not mean the engine will quit immediately.

A thump from the lower end should be investigated. But yet also means the lower end will not give way immediately.

Coolant leak - at 203K I would replace the hoses - and all the hoses you can replace.

And the fan clutch.

and the radiator with a new Nissens

and the 180 degree Thermostat.

And keep driving it.
