Smile 2001 Discovery gets a new home

Well after a couple of years of ownership, our 2001 DII got a new home today. We bought it with about 75k miles on it not long after it had the head gaskets replaced by a local very reputable shop. Within a few thousand miles we noticed that it started getting air in teh cooling system. To make matters worse, my daughter had the truck at college in Utah.
She became a pro at bleeding the cooling system on the DII. Nevertheless, the head gaskets needed to be replaced again after less than 20k miles. The truck got some new head gaskets and a full valve job, new magnacore, plugs, hoses, thermostat and a few other things last March and went about 20 miles when the engine Chernobled. (not sure if it was a faulty head gasket job or if it was a block crack issue that became more apparent after the heads were torqued down during the head gasket job) Meanwhile the truck sat at the shop in Salt Lake while I tried to 1. find a new motor or 2. figure a fix one the block. turns out the block, and front cover were damaged beyond repair by the engine meltdown. Bought an engine and before it was installed, found out that it had a slipped liner.......Six months later and I finally found a good engine out of a 2002 DII that had been sitting at a body shop for the last eight years with just 17k miles on it. To make things even better, it was just forty miles from the shop that was working on the truck. Got it installed and the truck literally runs like a brand new. It is amazing. Uses no oil, had no leaks, drips, or strange sounds. Other than some light clear coat fading on the hood, the truck looks like new. Even the hand brake boot looked like new!

With my twin boys leaving the county for two years, one in Ghana and the other in Paraguay, we didn't need six vehicles, or the associated auto insurance bills that come along with them.

I was really sorry to see it go. After putting the work that we do into these things, you kind of develop a kinship with them. However, I sold it to a Marine that couldn't have been happier to get it. He was really excited. Frankly, I was pretty happy for him, he is getting a really nice truck. I got his email within 20 minutes of posting it on Craigslist! Wow.

So, down to just the 2000 DII, that, other than the occasional three amigos, is running really well. So, in the aftermath of replacing the engine, I ended up with a set of heads, with 20 miles on a full machine shop service, including a full valve job, an a/c unit, intake manifold, starter, crankshaft sensor, a couple of sai pots, idle control unit and an assortment of other misc. parts. If you want a deal on any of this stuff drop me a pm.

This forum has been an absolute lifesaver! The knowledge here is unparalelled. Thanks to all of you for your help over the last 5 years. It has helped keep our 1999 DI, the 2000 DII and the 2001 DII on the road and me out of bankruptcy. As long as we have the 2000, I am sure that I will be frequenting the Forum, hopefully as a giver of knowledge rather than as a consumer. I might even tackle that Three Amigos if I get really motivated, and if anyone can ever figure out whether we should use the Falconworks or the Webco shuttle valve switches! All the best. Phil
