2001 Parking brake problems
I recently purchased a 2001 Series II with 40,000mi. The day I went to pick it up from the dealership the salesman pulled the parking brake too hard and it was locked in place (the cable, not the handle). A new cable was installed and the brake seemed to work fine. Low and behold it is two weeks later and it has happened again. I do not have a warranty on the vehicle, but the salesman is going to take care of it. I am wondering what is causing the problem. I pulled the cable out today and I think that it may have become too hot and the plastic liner melted to the cable. Has anyone run into this type of problem? I know it is not my responsibility to fix it this time, but my assumption is that the problem lies somewhere else and I don't feel like ruining any more $115 parking brake cables or having the disco stuck in my driveway or worse. Thanks
Obvious fix, don't use the park brake whenever possible. But that's easy for me to say, I live in FL. The steepest incline around here is the bridge going over the intercoastal. Second, thank your lucky stars that u have a seemingly helpful dealership many of us are not that lucky. My dealer would have ignored me until they had more of my $$. As for the brake issue, DiscoMike would probably be the best to help u, he may have run into this particular problem before.
I would remove the cable and check both ends for corrosion, clean it, use a cable lube injector to get some grease inside (clean with WD40 grease with something else, teflon lube works but put real waterproof grease at the ends to keep the dirt out)
After over 5 years of driving my Disco, I have used the e-bake one tine because of a off road problem that came up. Granted with a new cable you shouldn't be having this type of problem, you really don't need to use the brake as the tranny has more then enough of a park pin to keep you from ever moving.
As for your concern, the e-bake cable/handle area are always hot from heat from the tranny.

I read somewhere that there could be a bad ground that has taken a path through the parking brake cable and could be causing it to heat up. I have pulled the brake assembly out for now, so that the disco is mobile. I don't want to put another cable in before I find out what is causing it to get so hot from the inside out. Is it possible that it needs more protection from the tranny/exhaust heat?

So, you're saying we can just remove the parking brakes entirely?
That would save some rotating mass.
