Cool 2002 4.0 or 4.6?

Working on my neighbors 02 D2 (post-facelift but fogs under bumper and single bulb style headlights -not the 03/04 style headlights).

Typical HG issues.
Pulled apart, HG failure on RH bank, rear, into coolant jacket.

Originally thought this was a 4.0 motor, but it's identical to my '04's 4.6 (minus the SAI) -so I just figured I was wrong and that it was indeed a 4.6.

Got confused when the crank says 4.0 on it and repair info & parts info only show a 4.0 for this year.

SO: how do I know whether it's a 4.0 or 4.6?
Emissions sticker under the hood claims 4.6... typically that's what I go with.
Looks like a 4.6, stickers says 4.6, crank says 4.0, repair info (ShopKeyPro) and parts look up (PartsGeek, NapaProlink, ebay) claim 4.0.

WHAT IS IT??
Thanks guys!

03 and 04 are post facelift. They have the 4.6. 99-02 have the 4.0.
The 4.0 and 4.6 are the same except the crankshaft, rods and pistons. I dont think you can tell from the outside.

Check the VIN.

If it has 4.0 on the crank it is a 4.0 now regardless of what it started life as.

What's it take to make a 4.0 a 4.6?

Is that all?
Engine management is the same? Seems too simple.
What's the catch?

4.6 block. I thought they were interchangeable, but seems not so.

That's it, everything will work if you use all of the other parts from your existing engine. Engine management will plug and play.

4.0 had a ZF 4HP22 transmission and 4.6 had ZF 4HP24 but plenty of people have kept the 22 trans.

Why do you think? I hope you're wrong...I'm building one now.

They look identical, it's a 4.0. Better engine TBH
