First part of that is probably compression ratio. The second # I thought was the engine number but, unless #s that Rover V8 engine link are in progressive sequences, I didn't see a match.

Looks like it was once sleeved on one cylinder (top hat).

4.0 on crank (as previously mentioned)
Is that HG problem anywhere near the new sleeve??? You sure it's the HG?

I just checked three blocks,

The 00 4.0 is 9.35:1 and 95D, casting # on side of block is HRC2411

The 03 4.6 is 9.37:1 and 08D, casting # on that block is LCF000250

The one I'm driving 03 4.6 is 9.37:1 and 08D as well and casting on it is also LCF000250

Are you sure yours is not 58D instead of 56D?

anyway 9.35:1 is a 4.0 block and it has 4.0 on the crank so is a 4.0

you can check down on the side of your block to see the casting number if you want to know. The HRC2411 blocks are supposed to be better than the LCF000250 blocks but that wouldn't be a big hill to climb.

Mystery deepens....

Casting is LCF000250

Yes, one leak was by sleeve. You can catch your fingernail in the difference between the sleeve and the deck. The main leak was at #6 where the head gasket failed into the coolant port.

I think 2000 was when they changed castings on the blocks. so your number would be right for an 02 and your compression ratio is for 4.0 and your crank is for 4.0 so it's a 4.0

You may have cracked block behind that sleeve. I would make up block off plates to pressure test before spending any money on that engine now that you have mentioned the replaced sleeve.
There is a company that rents the block off plates but I don't remember the name.

Thanks for the help.
So far, there's no $ in the project.
We were going to determine state of health on the engine first, then proceed.
I'm dropping the heads, block, crank and pistons off at the machine shop for pressure testing and inspection.
After that I'll go with the 4.0 parts!

ZG, in full disclosure I liked the 01 we had better than the 04 we have now. I couldn't really tell much of a power difference and it seemed to leak far less...so I cannot disagree with you past trying to love what I own!

not to be the grim reaper but any coolant leak near a bore means the block has suffered a catastrophic failure.
They are not meant to be wet liners, if there is coolant near a bore there is a crack.
yes, the block can be made usable by welding and flanged liners.
but do you think you would be better off starting with another block
that hasn't suffer such a failure?
