Question 2002 disco ii, starts on second or third try

Hey everyone, Jason here. First time poster, but i have been searching and reading around, getting tips for a while.

As the title says, my 2002 disco ii with 50K miles is only starting on the second or thrid try. It cranks as it should every time, and will eventually start, but usually on the second and sometimes the third try.

I have looked up this problem in general and it seems to be some sort of fuel leak in the pump, the regulator or other.

I want to try to fix this myself and i was wondering where would be a good place to start or is there any other littles tests i can do to point me in the right direction.

Thanks for any help!

Just replace the fuel pump.
Roll up the carpet in the cargo area, open the access hatch and remove you pump and then replace it, it is weak and not holding PSI after you shut it off.
Next time before you start it turn the key to the "II" or "RUN" position, count to 3, turn off, repeat, on the third try start the truck, should fire right up.
You are priming the fuel system by doing this.

Before you replace the pump do the key test just to confirm, but I am 99% sure that is the problem.

Alright I was looking to buy and was wondering how do you tell if your rover has secondary air or not? There are two fuel pumps.

Before you go throwing parts at your truck, has it been tuned yet, including new 8 mm plug wires?
What octane gas are you running, do you ever pump the gas pedal to start it?

I just recently purchased the vehicle, and i do not know the last time it was tuned, i use 91 octane gas, and i do not pump the gas pedal, just put my foot on the break. I may have pushed down on the gas once or twice accidentally while trying to start.

I tested out the turning it to the II position three times and on the third time starting it, and it works every time.

Is there an easy way to tell if i have secondary air?

So, here again, go check your plugs and see if they are original, if so, by time you are past due for your 60K by time along with wires.
Have you ever gotten a check engine light, if so what codes?
Try, over the next few cold start mornings, prime the system, if it fires right up them you have a bad valve in the fuel pump, causing the fuel pressure to bleed down over night.

Alright i will research how to check the plugs for originality. I have not had a check engine light but occasionally the three amigos (TC, ABS, and downhill control) will illuminate.
