Default 2002 Disco Mis-firing and Service Engine Soon

Hey All,

Just got my 2002 Disco a month ago and its been running great. Today the service engine light came on and it started running sluggish. Later that day at idle it was running really rough. When Driving it will "mis-fire" or so it feels. When it did this the Service Engine Soon light flashed for a while then went back to a steady state.

I know I need to get my codes read first off so:

A) where is the plug in for the reader?
B) Does this sound like a common issue?

Any help or experiences will be helpful, i know there is not much to do without the codes.

Things I do know though, When I rev engine (up to 5k) there is no white puffs of smoke (thank god) nor when I first start it. Also I checked my oil and it is still nice and honey colored, not milky.

Thanks in advance guys and gals,

-DrCox

99.9% that you need to replace your spark plug wires and spark plugs. common for the factory pieces to show the issues you are describing.

i would recommend NGK Iridium spark plugs and everyone will tell you to get magnacore wires.

$150 in parts and you should be good to go

The ODB-II port is under the steering wheel. Get your 8mm magnecor wires from Apex Performance for $85, don't skimp here. Most any good plugs will do (if they have not been changed in a year or so). Sounds quite common especially if you still have your stock wires or a crappy autozone set.

get the 8mm magnecor not the 7mm. And make sure you come back after the plugs and wires are changed and let us know if everything is good again.

Thanks All, Ordering the Wires now, Not sure if I am going with the iridium or +4 plugs but it sounds like either will be cool. Let you know updates when I get them

Installing the wires is a bit tricky and if you go to a garage they will want to take off your upper intake manifold (I would too if I were them), they will charge you a fair bit of time for that. Good news is you can DIY easily (though a bit frustrating the 1st time around). Follow the sticky on the top of the forum. If you have any questions ask us. If you need the wiring diagram let us know.

Thanks for the warning on installing plug wires,

Another quick question. I noticed that everyone is recommending the 8mm plug wires. Magnecor also offers a 8.5mm wire. is there any advantage to these @$106 vise the $85 for 8mm?

Thanks,

I believe you run into fitting problems with anything bigger than 8mm.

Stay with the Plus 4 plugs and save your money. Plus 4 and good wires will gice you more low end torque.
As for your codes, go get them read and get back to us with the 4 digit fault codes numbers so just incase some of the guys have jumped the gun, you will then know what else is going on.
