Default 2003 2004 Disco

Hello All,

New guy here. Lately, I've been eyeing the LR Discovery. I'm quite interested in the 2003 and 2004 year. I've read all the horror stories but my interest persist.

I saw a dealer Ad for an 2004 SE7 Disco for $14,900 at over 99,000 km. Is this over priced? I'm mainly looking for a 7 seater disco.

Thanks a lot.

This is the first series Discovery section, but we can still help. Depending on where you are, $14k for an 8 year old Discovery is a bit steep. I would continue to shop around. You might be able to find an LR3 (Discovery 3) for just a couple thousand more than this D2. With all of the improvements made over the D2, it would be worth every dollar.

A 2003 - 2004 is a Discovery II so your question may get more answers in that forum (this is Disco I) but a lot of members read both sections. Where are you located, that has a big effect on price. Around here (Seattle) I've seen a few 2004's at that price at a dealer but most dealers are around the 11K mark with private parties at 8-9K, of course that depends on what it needs. The cost of repairs can add up real fast (faster if you can't do the work yourself) Over in the DII section there are a some "Must reads" regarding buying a DII that I think you will find helpful before you buy one.

Oops... Thanks Guys.
I'm in Canada so the price I mentioned is in Canadian dollar.
Should I re post or will this be moved to the Disco II section.
Yup, I'm not much of a mechanic. I've done oil changes and even performed a radiator replacement on a 94 Celica (once) so owning a LR will be a challenge for sure.

I'm not sure what the rate of u.s. dollar to canadian dollar is so I can't say if that is high or not. If it is actually $14k U.S. dollar for a 2004 DII thats to much. Maybe if it had 2000km on it and was in pristine condition. I would go for a LR3. You can pick up 06's for around $17k U.S. dollar in Iowa. Consider a diesel though if canada allows for them?!?! As far as ownership goes, buying a DII more people on the forums have ripped them apart and built them back up then the LR3's. But if you buy a LR3 then pay the extra $2-3k for the extended warranty so it saves you the hassle for a few years if something goes wrong. Well worth it when $2-3k goes real fast at the dealers here. ($220 a hr u.s. dollar)
Cheers

Last time I was in Vancouver (about 6 months ago) it seemed that the exchange rate had flipped from it's historical inequity of the US Dollar being worth a bit more, it was either at parity or a bit higher in value. (I don't know why they just don't link the 2 together). Anyway, this isn't an international monetary policy discussion. Around here this is typical of prices (from Seattle Craigslist) 2003 Land Rover Discovery SE7

14k is too much for any Discovery these days imo. The main things you want to check when you look at the DII's are the front drive shaft, have the head gaskets been replaced, does it have the ABS 3 amigos, ticking, and what maintenance has it had. The 2004 is superior in ability to the 03 because of the Diff lock. But if you want to ride like a pimp, the 2003 is the last year of Oslo Blue.

Wow! Good job with the Disco.

I saw another Ad here 2003 Land Rover Discovery SE7. Similar to yours but I'm worried about the oil pump issue on 2003s.

Thanks for all the craigslist Ads guys. I'm a bit far from Seattle. I'm in the Toronto area actually.

I'm learning a lot from this site. I'm going to take my time and learn a bit more. I don't want to rush into this considering what the outcome could be.

If you get serious about a Disco, take it to a Rover mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection, it will be the best money ever spent.
