I am taking it Rover Tech in Wall NJ, he is on here a bit.

I agree on all the comments.

First thing, I would do is put in a low temp thermostat, or better yet the bypass that Extinct sells, did a load of good for my temps, down to low 190s max from 210s max
Run heavy wt rotella
Run some cleaner for a few oil changes
Give it an Italian tune up
Check the oil pressure, easy to do with a loaner kit, just to rule out low oil pressure.
Check for exhaust leak w soapy water, or other
I have been dealing with my tick for years, mostly ignored it was very intermittent, now it is much more consistent. Used to be pretty rare.

None of these are particularly expensive, difficult or risky. Probably a couple hours in the driveway and you will have a reasonably high degree of confidence around the cause.

In my case, it started at about 180 and if i sprayed water on it, went away in 5 seconds and then came back after I stopped soaking it. Hoping this fixes it.

Where are you taking it to get pinned?
Nevermind. Just read your follow up.

Mine ticks at hot idle.....sometimes. 2004 with 176k. I know the motor is tired but it runs well and moves the truck just fine. Doesn't smoke or really use any oil at all, no leaks except a valve cover weep. Sometimes sounds like a bag of marbles. I replaced the front cover / oil pump. Redid the cooling and added the Extict thermo - mod. All helped but the tick is still there. I'm going with - Tired-old-motor-has-a-tick. And just driving it.

Just curious, what's the quote for pinning it?

My 03 ticked when hot. I installed the 180 thermostat then the inline thermostat and never ticked again the dissimilar metals start to expand at higher temps and liners start moving

or it could be something more serious

I dont really have it yet, depends upon how many cylinders. But it sounds like a days labor.

Chris is a really interesting person. seems like the perfect person to be working on Land Rovers, had an old open series 1? that was beautiful, Mclaren. Bunch of interesting cars in the yard, seems really knowledgeable.

Default Sleeves

So, I got it back after a couple of weeks, no rush really on my part. Chris pinned the drivers side sleeves, you can see the threaded part and nut sticking out w the red loctite. I have never heard a rover so quiet!! It was a fairly big check, but a fraction of a rebuilt engine, plus I already have everything else sorted. Even a "new" block would be a huge setback given everything else. It has been >90 here since I got it back, temp is just over 200 with the extinct thermostat, no ticking. I should have done this a long time ago, I was almost ready to buy another one, or buy something practical. I think I bought myself more happy, quiet miles.

Chris is extremely knowledgeable, ever sorted out my Four Amigos, ABS fault. re-wired my MAF sensor, I had an extended it for a cone filter. He did not jump right into pinning sleeves, we explored other potential problems, sources of the ticking, plus the overall health of the engine, viability of a good repair. A completely off-the-run repair is not easy to find and people like Chris are important for keeping Rovers running. As long as it holds up, doesn't leak, this was absolutely the way to go.

If you are any where near Howell, NJ, get it done. In the Porsche world, there are shops where people ship their cars from all over the country to get repaired. I think this is probably that kind of place for Rovers.

And I was just about to welcome you to the Ticking Rovers club. Oh well. I'm also very interested in the cost, if you don't mind sharing.

It was $2k. About what Mercedes charges for the brakes on my GLS.

Not really that bad, the first real money I have put into it. I have lots of leakage of cash. Ill keep it forever.

He ended up having to cut the cross member and some of the exhaust off. Welded it all back together.
