RE: 2003 disco general questions
2003 is the only Discovery with the oil pump failure.
If your truck does fall in the VIN range all you have to do is watch out for your oil light while you drive. If it ever comes on throw it in neutral, shut the truck off and don't start it until you have put in a new oil pump. It's unfortunately the only way to save the engine.

Situation Oil pump failures on 2003 Discovery Series II vehicles may be the result of a manufacturing error. Locating dowel pins may be slightly misaligned permitting assembly of the oil pump to the engine block, but placing stress on the pump housing which can ultimately lead to leakage or failure. Resolution Whenever an oil pump failure is encountered on vehicles within the above VIN range the only effective repair currently available is replacement of the complete engine assembly including the front cover/oil pump manufactured to the latest tolerances. Use the following components to affect a repair: • LBB112301 4.6 Engine assembly LEV • LBB111461 4.6 Engine assembly NON-LEV

RE: 2003 disco general questions
Are there any signs or noises that could be heard for this oil pump pending failure prior to breakage.
I am assuming it is a good a idea to take the oil pan off and replace the oil pump, to be on the safe side.
Good used low mileage 4.6 engines from salvage yards are running between $3000 and $4000.

In this case, it wasn't the oil pump but the engine moldings that held the oil pump, that were the problem, hence a new long block.

Just outside the range. Although for what it's worth I've been told, by a local service tech, that some 04 trucks have had the same problem. Bit of a crap shoot in my estimation. Having said that I just bought a 03 in the VIN range.
The VIN range was 3A771801 - 3A808362
