The 03-04 fan units have the clutch integrated into the fan and are super expensive as you must purchase LR OEM. The upgrade is to get the earlier fan so that you can utilize an aftermarket heavy-duty clutch, or easily and quickly replace that clutch should it fail in the future, as all big box stores will have it on the shelf

I have an 03 with '02 fan, Hayden HD clutch, 180 Tstat and coolant temps of 200 at idle on a 100 degree day. I added Water Wetter this weekend and coolant is now doing 190 at idle. Those electric fans and inline thermostat mods are good for dependability and consistent lower coolant temps but not completely necessary. Props to those that do take the time for these mods

I highly recommend the inline thermostat mod. It's extremely easy to do and take a few hours tops. I run 183-188.6 virtually all the time now in all conditions.
If you want to keep your head gaskets fresh. Do this mod.

I wonder if this double fan would work. It says that its a direct for for a 2003 D2.

I guess that my questions would be what plugs into it and if it runs non stop or has some sort of t stat to turn it on. Sorry for my ignorance here.

I've been running the OEM 180 grey stat for a few years now and just recently got a new radiator and water pump.
I notice no difference in temps with the new rad or wp.
Also I do notice on hot days over 95F that is the only time I ever go over 200. I did some testing over the summer and it only happens at high speeds (RPM's) and on hills. so under load. I saw down steep hill temps in high heat get lower than I've ever seen before, down to 183, coasting of course.
Other than hot days I am always between 188.6 and 197.
The hottest I've seen it get since the 180 stat has been 207 which of course was on a 100+ degree day.
As I've mentioned in other posts on this subject, I've had the original stat, a motorad version of original and the (current) OEM grey 180. By far the highest temps were obtained with the Motorad.
If anyone is looking to get their temps down to a reasonable level and is not in a hot climate, the first thing to do would be to go with the grey OEM 180 stat. If you need more cooling then the inline mod sounds like the way to go.

The people who say the fan should cycle say it taxes the alternator to run the fan constantly, but others say the alternator generates a constant amount of power, and what isn't used by the system is dissipated as heat by the voltage regulator. The latter makes sense to me.

I bought a soft spring TD5 stat from Atlantic British, but it wasn't OEM 180*f,,
It was dark charcoal color & stamped 78*c = 172.5*f,,
Installed in August ,, at +92* ambient , city driving AC on, below 35mph & lots of traffic lights, 185*-194* max was when waiting for green light, fwy AC on 75mph more consistent 189*-195*,,,, at idle AC on after 20 min (ambient +95*) between 188*-197* going up & down every 40-45 seconds, I guess due to mix of stat opening & electric fan coming on,,,
Highest temp reached when idle & AC off 192-198.5*,,,
I guess these temps are very similar to OEM 180* stat, (but I never had a 180* stat installed to compare to,,,,
