A few weeks ago my Discovery starting making a weird grinding noise in the front end that sounded like it was coming from right in the middle of the car. It speeds up when I do. I took it into a shop today and they grabbed the front drive line, twisted it back and forth and there's a lot of play and a sort of clunking noise. There is definite signs that it has been leaking, but I haven't seen drips personally. (Probably empty. Argh.) They told me the transfer case is bad. Can I drop the transfer case without the transmission? Is an overhaul more advisable that a replacement?

Are you sure your drive shaft hasn't failed, very common problem?
Yes, if the t/case is bad, it can be dropped with out removing the tranny.

really trying to get rid of that box, arent you mike?? hes right. and i wouldnt suggest overhauling it unless youve done it before, it uses crush sleeves, not spacers, so it takes a good amount of touch and knowing exactly what youre doing, that is if you can even get parts

How many miles are on the truck?

 

It is safer and cheaper to go with a used transfer case that comes with a warranty. Mike is right, make sure your drive shafts have the grease fittings and are in good shape.

Found this on EBAY, it is a warranted used transmission for a 2003 d2 for $549, they may have the transfer case or it could be included, you can contact the salvage yard:

Lt230s rarely fail, unless it was run dry. I'm with mike. Driveshaft or what not.

 

Is there a way for me to tell if it's the driveshaft and not the transfer case?

Where do I check for oil on the transfer case?

It has 63000 miles on it.

Did some more reading and checked the oil level in the transfer case...it's perfect. Any suggestions from here?

 

The fluid level is only part of the check, it needs to be drained and then inspect the magnetic drain plug for metal chunks.
As for what else to do, e-mail your tele number if you want some more help with it.
