Default 2004- 1 coil pack or 2 seperate coils and labor time?

I've just been quoted $98 per coil and approx 3 hours of labor to do my coils, however I thought there is one part- 2 coils together in a pack?
The shop is also insisting on removing the intake manifold, which results in more labor and a $80 gasket.
Is everything checking out here? Also, if responders could also review my related thread- "magnacor wires freak occurrence" that should show up just before this new thread. I'm worried the coils or coil pack might not be bad at all.

you can have the coil packs checked with the proper scanner this might eliminate throwing parts at the problem......

$98 per coil pack is a great price. The intake manifold gasket should be no more than $25/40. Its a one time use steel crush gasket. I think you can buy it at Carquest or Orielly's if the shop will install your parts. 3hrs labor sounds good. As getting to those coil packs is difficult...maybe not for an experienced Rover mechanic, but any other mechanic will be coursing. Most the time its not your coil packs going bad, but they are difficult to diagnose without the correct scanner or someone that knows ohm readers.

The intake gasket is $100.98 from the dealer. I know from personal experience. I just re-used the old one with some permatex sealant. $98 a coil and 3 hours labor is a steal. It took me a lot longer than 3 hours. Such a good deal that you better check or mark things and make sure stuff actually gets changed.

The 3 hours is correct per book time. Atlantic British has the plenum gasket for $40, and if he is using the standard markup, $80 or so sounds right. Compared to AB, there is no markup on the coils, so I would be leery of what brand he is using, or if they are used parts. Make sure he is going to warranty the work he does.

britishpacific sells the gasket for $12.50. I know some of their stuff isn't so great, but when I ordered this part it was an allmakes4x4 part, and that's the same brand that roversnorth uses for some of their "proline" stuff.

How many miles on your 04, why do you think you need your coils changed, do you have a fault code, if so, what is it?

Hi Mike. 81k miles. No fault code. Mechanic claims coils bad, very often the culprit behind misfires and poor mpg he says. I do believe this assessment was done without an ohm meter? or appropriate special measuring tool. He is reputed to be a 15 yr. LR-only mechanic.
If you view my other recent thread- "Magnecor wires freak occurrence" it will give some insight into my misfiring problem. The coils may or may not be the problem according to other posters.
I nabbed a good coil pack from Will Tillery at Roverguy for $100. I also saw later that Lucky8 sells new ones for only $33 each on Ebay???
My thought here is to give the mechanic the benefit of the doubt since the coils are coming cheap enough. I am also assured that if the new coils do not fix the misfiring and mpg issues they will continue hunting down the problem for free.

Jafir- thanks for the hot tip on the $13 intake plenum gasket! Just ordered.
