2004 Disco 2 deal or no deal
Owned a 98 for a while that I bought for a few hundred and used for a hunting rig. Always wanted another one. This guy said he’d trade me for my TJ but how bad would I be gettin screwed? I could get at least 8 grand for my Jeep. I know this disco isn’t worth what he’s asking right?

If you are like me and others here who bleed green, it would be an ideal 2nd vehicle for whatever your purpose. I would not have one for my daily driver and depend on it. I drive a 4Runner for my DD. It has lasted me 14 years with less than 2k in repairs over that time. It’s your decision but search the forum here and read all about them. If you do decide to get it, don’t buy it site unseen and pay as little as you absolutely can.

Go to ANY car forum - Honda, Volvo, BMW etc and you'll read MANY threads about issues people experience. Its a common thread in any forum.
Many folks on here have lots of miles and DD drive their Discos without issue.
Take care of your truck, do the maint, which I'm sure you've done way more than 2k in maint on that Toyota, and it'll be dependable.
I DD mine 50 miles a day - it hasnt blown up yet - maybe I should just walk instead or maybe my Nikes will blow out :P

Yep if a D1/D2 was truly an unreliable POS = I wouldn’t touch em. I’ve now owned 21 LR’s and not 1 of them was a POS aka money pit and not a one of them blew up, or left me stranded on the side of the road left for dead!
I owned 5 Gen 1 Mitsubishi Montero’s and they were all excellent, but when a part did fail it wasn’t cheap or commonly available. IAC motor was 350.00 and a dealer item only at the time & both my 89 3.0L V6 4DR’s eventually needed one. Then I went with Jeeps that everyone (including my dad praised as bulletproof) & I was truly disappointed to be honest. The 05’s I had used basically plastic pistons in their brake calipers & when they heated up they’d warp & stick..... Then the OPDA unit could fail and cause $$$$ issues & they were dealer items only & usually on back order... The PRNDL linkage on the 4spd auto could fall off completely due to a .50 bushing due to a **** poor design, then you had poor welds on the axles, and not a single Jeep axle I owned had a nicely painted diff or suspension. It was rusty off the showroom.
Then we have LR which everyone seems to complain about... I bought my first LR which was a 97 SE D1 from the used car lot at a local Toyota dealership. It had 54k on it and besides someone scratching it down the side it was mint. The day I bought it I went by LR Austin to just grab a few misc items, and they asked if I’d like it washed. I said sure so they drove it around back. They then came & asked if I had like 30min to an hour to wait? I said sure, but what’s up? They said oh your catalytic converters are rattling and they need to be replaced. I said oh no thanks I just bought it & I don’t have that kind of $$$$ right now. They said oh no sir it’s under warranty until 8 years or 80k. I said oh okay sure, they got to work on it.
About an hour & half later (they offered me a free LR as loaner if I needed it) it drove around the side and was done. At first it was so clean I didn’t think it was mine! They fully detailed inside & out, performed 2 free service campaigns, and replaced my cats for FREE!!!!! At that moment I was completely hooked! They didn’t care that I didn’t buy it from them, they cared it was their product & they went all out to make me feel proud of what I was driving! To this day I am still proud to be behind the wheel of a LR.
I have dealt with Dodge, Ford, GM, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Jeep with service, and warranty work, and no one comes close to LR. Jeep never washed it, offered a loaner, and the shuttle wouldn’t go out to my house (5 miles from the dealership). At Nissan I had a problem 2 weeks after buying it, took it back & the salesman didn’t even remember me.... LR remembered me, invited me to off road events, or unique parties whenever a new model came out 94 D90/Discovery party was AMAZING, LR3 party was cool as well.
So yes I love LR’s but at the same time if it was unreliable I’d just own one and use it as a weekend toy. My 99 D2 went thru nearly 4ft deep water during Hurricane Harvey with water over the hood at times & it never quit, acted up or died. It got me thru that 3/4 mile long water crossing 6 times!! I passed plenty of dead Toyota 4Runners/Tacoma’s that had sucked water into their intakes & were done. At the time my 99 DID NOT have a snorkel.
Nothing I’ve owned has ever come close to being as reliable and a life saver as a LR. My 97 D1 ended up rolling over on a foggy/rainy TX FM Road & I walked away without a scratch. Let people think they’re crap. That’ll leave more of them for me lol.

150k miles Wokie. How far do you drive a day? Do you know how to work on the motor for this truck? Are you willing to learn? Do you know they get terrible gas mileage? Are you willing to spend money to keep it running? Can you verify all the work the seller claims to have done. Only giving the guy a heads up. If a person isn’t willing to do the repairs themselves they will never make it. We all know what Indy shops charge just to change the oil. Hey, your money your time your truck.
in 14 years for my 4Runner I’ve replaced the spark plugs, air filter a hand full of times, serp belt, 1 coil pack, front brake pads the rear are original, front axel shaft done under warranty (faulty cv boot issue) and regular oil changes every 5k miles with synthetic since new. So yep, less than $2k not including the oil changes.

I think my 08 Hummer H3 Alpha with the 5.3L V8 cost me nothing but fuel, insurance, and oil changes the entire 4 years I owned it and the 50K I put on it. Nothing broke, nothing needed replacing at all and I sold it for nearly what I paid for it 4 years earlier. Sadly the new owner was a complete IDIOT and the last picture I ever saw of my mint H3 Alpha was on FB during Hurricane Harvey with the owner bragging about driving thru water up to the windows... Then the next post were oh the electrical system is acting up, it's not shifting right... Then I never saw another pic or post about it, so I think he killed it.....
