Closing out this thread.
I've put 900 miles on the truck since the hose blew off. With no other symptoms or problems, i'm forced to conclude that the lower clamp was the culprit.

I carry around spare hoses, thermostat, coolant and clamps now in my rooftop spares box. It might come in handy one day!
