2004 Disco Alternator
Hi All,
My 2004 Disco was sending out some odors last night from the engine compartment and the alternator seemed to be the point of origination....
This morning the battery light came on and sure enough, the alternator was stinking pretty bad.
So the replacement range goes from $850 @ dealer to $350 from Amazon - part# - Valeo W0133-1826281-VAL
Has anyone had experience with the Valeo brand?
I have never rebuilt one of these, what usually goes on these things and is it worth rebuilding or replacing?
Thank you for your help - Paul

Hope this helps. Saw this high output 220 amps for $349.00 at
220AMP Alternator for Imports and Domestics - Fitzall-220 | PowerBastards.com
Saw the Valeo part you wrote and some sites says it will fit all as well. and the valeo is only 120 amps rating according to specs. $384.00

Lower rating should not be a concern unless you run around with a marginal battery. Prices are all over the map, from new no name imports to the original Bosch. If looking for a new one myself wouldn't hesitate to purchase the Valeo but no personal experience, otherwise I'd consider a lifetime rebuilt from the chains if available where you live. If you have down time available rebuilding yourself could be an option if odors weren't the result of frying too badly and you've had some previous experience doing so on other alts.

Thanks Gents,
Time is of the essence with this repair as it is my wife's daily driver. Amazon already shipped it and it should be here Thursday.
I'll pull the old one and pull it apart (thanks for the idea #9) and see if it can be rebuilt. Worse case is I have an extra for next time.
I'll post how good the valeo one is once complete.
It seemed to b early to go, the truck only has 124,000kms on it. Kind of premature to me.

The Valeo Brand was OEM. It was Bosch/Valeo 130AMP units in D2's. I would certainly have grabbed a 99-02 RR 150AMP vs the 130AMP, it's not a huge upgrade requiring new wiring, but it's 20AMP's if you've got any aftermarket lights, a winch, or a bigger stereo.
I recently bought an Ebay wonder from "Parts Player" for my D1 vs going to Auto Zone/Oreilly's and it's a very high quality looking alternator for $134.00! Parts Player got 4 out of 5 stars on Amazon. I have a Valeo spare D2 alternator, but if my original dies (224K on it so far on the OEM unit) I'll probably grab a Parts Player RR 150AMP unit.
The Alternator that died in my 98 D1 was a refurb from Auto Zone (previous owner had just had it installed) and it looked really cheap, and it died in a very odd way and all the guts seemed to have exploded that contained the brushes...
