Default 2004 Disco II trouble

Hi all,

This is my first post. I recently purchased a 2004 Disco II SE7 with 101,500 miles. I have had it for less than one week. I have put about 250 miles on since purchased.
Issues: Codes and temp are being read with ultragauge. Temps are 197F on the highway at 50-65mph- in town and at idle the max I have seen is 206F. typically idles at ~200F or lower. Idle speed is anywhere between 660-760 rpm.
O2 readings at idle and reving to 2000rpm parked are
B1S1- 0.08-0.110
B1S2- 0.120 -0.640
B2S1- 0.075 - 0.755
B2S2 - 0.675 - 0.740
  • 1/28/2022 Very rough starting - check engine light flashing then solid. CODE P0308 _ Cleared the code and it did not happen again 1/28/2022
noticed rear cargo area carpet was very wet in the pad. When squeezed water poured out. Must have been frozen before.
  • Noticed water and air sound coming from the dash on the passanger side of the front seat. Forum searches suggest air in the system. I followed the RAVE manual procedures and have vented multiple times. Last venting was on 2/1/2022. I have added about 1/2 gallon of coolant to the system. The system does not seem to be losing coolant. - ( I have added some coolant during the venting- a little less than 1/2 gallon) I figured it was not vented fully when coolant was flushed
  • 1/29/2022 Noticed oil spots in the snow under the car in the morning. Looks to be coming from the area near the rear differential and gearbox or front diff.
  • 1/31/2022 Pending code P1174 lean bank 2
  • 1/31/2022 I removed the rear cargo area side panels to be able to remove the rear rug and to see if the area where the leak is coming from can be identifed. Carpet is being dried out in my basement.
  • 2/1/2022 sealed areas identified in service bulletin No: 76/01/03/NAS. I also sealed the area identified on the forum below the rear rain gutter. Ordered new door seals to rule out that as an issue. I will leak test once the new seals are in.
  • 2/2/2022 Bled cooling system again- changed o-ring on the bleeder screw- no leaks at temp. Did a short drive and did not hear the swooshing in the dash. Might be good for now. Need to watch coolant level. Tailpipe seems to have more white exhaust gasses than I think it should. The amount was less after driving for a short period of time.
  • 2/2/2022 Installed new cargo door seals and adjusted the door. gap was seen between the seals at the top of the door opposite the hinges. Adjusted the door and the seal is tighter now. I have not had a chance to water tested yet.
  • 2/3/2022 very rough starting this morning. Blinking service engine light, then solid light. Codes P1300, P0308, P0303, P0305.
My main concern is the engine the water leak is a minor issue. Trouble seems to be the morning following a long drive at highway speeds.

I was told that the following items were just replaced for the engine: head gaskets, valve cover gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, coils, spark plugs, wires and all 4 O2 sensors. Other new items listed: Upper and lower ball joints, battery, both front wheel hubs, steering tie rods- both, oil pan gasket, a pillar moldings, oil and filter, and headliner repair.

Carfax was clean and had been dealer serviced most of its life (may not be a good thing)
Car will be picked up by the car dealer and repaired under warranty. What would you suggest I do to protect myself from getting a lemon? Should I take it to a third party for evaluation or give the dealer a chance to make this right?

It runs smoothly when not acting up. lol

Thanks Bill

It's not a lemon, it's a Land Rover.

Pretty much everything here looks like standard issues that you're going to find discussed over and over on this forum. Read through the stickies at the top of the D2 forum before you launch into any major activity.
Looks like you have a sunroof leak, air in the cooling system (install the inline thermostat to help with this), and maybe you need new coils, plugs, and plug wires as a starting point.

Depending where you are and the outside temp white from the exhaust can go on for up to 15 -20 minutes, depending on how fast the engine warms up. Here in the PNW this time of year that is not unusual, if the temp is near 10f or less.

Thanks for the replies.

I have been reading all of the posts on issues and codes and would not be as worried if these happened months from purchasing the truck. If the HG and intake gaskets, coils, plugs, wires, and O2 sensors were just done would you expect to see the codes on the miss fires I have?

It may be crappy old plug wires going from the coils to the plugs. Do you have a couple underhood pics that show the plug wires? Do they actually look new? (you said they were replaced prior to your ownership)

Good find. Agree with the inline thermostat recommendation. Codes 030X are for specific cylinders, makes it pretty easy to troubleshoot. Swap components from misfiring cylinders to one that are not misfiring. Start with plugs, then wires, then coils, then injectors if you get that far. Injectors can be bad brand new out of the box. You can swap injectors left to right to determine if the sensor is bad.

could a battery not charging cause any of these issues? The truck will not start now, turn key to run position, hear some noise coming from dash in front of steering wheel (electronic noise), turn the key, nothing, no click no starter. Battery might be dead, low voltage? I will try and jump tomorrow.

just tried to jump no joy. Interior lights work, dash lights up, turn the key and nothing happens. I notice the clock goes out than comes back on when I turn the key if that is a clue to anything
