Default 2004 Disco - Pros & Cons

ok guys, I have a 1995 disco which i'm fond of but don't like the distributor type ignition. Would rather have a newer model with coil packs and CPS due to better handling of moisture and such...less chance timing will be obscured as its pretty enclosed and ecu isn't in engine bay. there are other likes and dislikes as well but.....

I'm considering buying a 2004 as it has the CDL(i wouldn't own a landy without the CDL). What are the pros and cons on the 2004 model??? Are they all air ride suspension(not a pro)???? Any cons i should know about before I consider taking this further????????????

Expeditions West state "2004 Discovery has CDL as factory option"????

http://www.expeditionswest.com/vehic...covery/cdl.htm

What models, SE, SE7...etc... have this "factory option" already installed or are all 2004's capable of installing the linkage? As I stated before I won't own a disco without the CDL.

D2's have the cdl up to mid 2001, you just need the shifter and linkage. 04's have it all. 01 through 03MY don't have the CDL, but the stuff is readily available if you find the right deal. Be aware that some of the 03, 04 trucks had oil pump issues.

I don't believe there is a Con for buying an 04. They only had SLS as an option, and I loved mine.

I do not see any cons to the 04. Some have started a rumor about oil pump failures, but I don't think they were any more prevalent than earlier years. My 97 had a failure at 50K, and I think it happed, but there were just so many trucks people didn't really notice. After the 03 scare, people notice every single one.

The 04 did not have Oil pump issues like the 03, so dont even factor that into the decision. As everyone has said, the 2004 is a great year of the Disco. Some would even argue that it is the best year of the Disco. I think if you can find one, jump on it.

I agree with you Cam, but there are a few that are on here saying the 04's have pump failures. They are all people with 03's that have blown and no reports from people with 04's that I have heard. Just a lot of people with no 1st hand knowledge posting about things they don't know about. I just wanted to clear it up becasue people keep posting it.

Kinda like people posting that removing the dowels is a fix. Still haven't heard about it working. Just people randomly posting what they have heard...

Be aware that Discovery 2’s are prone to drive shaft failure, ABS issues (three amigos) including shuttle valve failures.

I have never owned an '04 but according to these post there appears to be a problem. The one '04 con I'm certain about is price, you'll pay about double for an '04 than you will for a '99-'01 that is CDL capable with comparable miles.

Oh yeah, I knew ya did! I wasnt disagreeing with you, just wanted to make sure that the OP didnt have a concern with oil pump issues because it was mentioned earlier by someone else. Like you, Disco Mike and myself have all said on multiple topics, the 04 oil pressure issue has never been any higher then any other engine, so its really a non-issue IMO.

Fun fact: The 2003 Engine was never even installed on 2004 Discos, so any issue would be completely unrelated..
