Unhappy 2004 Discovery II revs high, wont accelerate

Hello all, complete newbie here. We recently acquired a 2004 landrover discovery II. Everything *seemed* fine until last week. While driving home it started revving really high, and wouldnt go past about 30 mph. My neighbor took a look and saw the drive shaft is cracked. Not sure what else could be the issue or what else to check from here. Any tips or hints would be appreciated, as I am not mechanically inclined. I know I will need to take it to a mechanic, but I'd like an idea of what I'm possibly going to need repaired so I can budget what I may need.

If it is the front driveshaft and it has not damaged anything as it has been spinning around, you're very lucky. And since you have a 2004, it is possible to unbolt it completely (4 bolts on each end, very simple job) and lock the central differential so you can carefully drive the vehicle to a shop to have it thoroughly inspected for damage.
If nothing other than the driveshaft is the problem, a replacement part can be had for under $250 and installation should take less than one hour.

If it is the drive shaft you got lucky, pull it off like mollusc says. It sounds to me like maybe a torque converter, whcih is not often discussed on this forum. So maybe it is unlikely. But if its not the drive shaft, I would think it is something internal to the trans. Does it shift?

It does shift fine.

I am hoping all it is, is the driveshaft. Fingers crossed we will have time to take it off and check this weekend. I'm sure I'll find more to post about once we get more into checking everything out
