Default 2004 Discovery II Should I be concerned.

Hi all.

After having so much trouble with a over heating Discovery II I finally have a cool running Discovery.

Now I am concerned that it may be TO cool.

Case in point, this morning on my commute to work (20 miles) at highway speed (70) truck temp gauge went to the first line and never went any higher. Out side air temp was in the lower 40's. I had heat in the truck.

Yesterday afternoon it was running "in the middle" with temps in the 60's.

Am I being paranoid? Can you run a disco engine to cool?

I rebuilt the engine with top hat's. After the rebuild I had a terrible time getting it to not over heat. Had to replace the thermostat, hoses hose clamps and bleed the system to get it to run right.

This truck has me gun shy, as now I am freaking out over it being to dam cool!

You cant rely on the dash gauge. Get an UltraGauge or some other ODB2 scanner to watch temps in real time. Temps should be as follows if your coolant system is working properly

1. Got the genuiue 180 tstat = 188-190 on highway, 195 -200 around town
2. standard lr tstat = high 190s to low 200s on hight, 210 - 215 around town.

Yes you can run an engine too cold, you would never leave open loop and get bad gas mileage.

yep. you need a live reading of temp data. ultra gauge, scan gauge, smart phone set up, something.

Yes I got a OBD II Scanner and smart Phone app from Tourque.

Temps today were about 140.

Is my thermostat sticking open? Wouldn't that cause an over heat?

When gauge in truck is in the middle truck sits at 170 to 175 sometimes lower.

This mornings temp was unusual as the gauge never went to the "normal" area.

I am fully aware the gauge us not to be trusted. My concern was it never moved to the middle. That was unusual.

Prior to my 180 T stat swap truck was consistently in the 220's and above.

Ok I'll check it.

It's not going to blown up the engine is it?

no...probably just worse mileage and poor performance.

Thanks Dusty.

I have to check how the mechanic did the cooling system. I tried for 3 days myself after the engine rebuild and had enough when I passed it on to my mechanic.

I couldn't bleed the system of all the air.

The thermostat is grey and he said it's the 180 t-stat you get off of Amazon and ebay.

He is going to get back to me.
