I went ahead and ordered the parts needed to pin the sleeves. I'm going to jump into that in the next couple weeks and will report back if that resolved it or not. I'm thinking it will. I'll also be changing out all the fluids.

I replaced the timing cover, a cracked oil pump, lifters and pushrods in my 04, 4.6 and it still ticked after warming up

I pinned all 8 liners...and it still ticked after warming up.
Turns out the cam and cam bearings, and rod and main bearings were all worn.
The "tick" sounds different resonating through an aluminum block.
There is no typical rod "knock" sound like a cast iron block.
I had my cylinders honed which was apparently enough to make 3 cylinders leak coolant between the block and sleeves, just from cranking, never starting. That combined with a completely new cooling system, and that became the weak spot.
I had previously pressure tested the block sucessfully before the total rebuild.
Now I need a 4.0 block(and use my crank and all internals to keep it a 4.6) and engine gaskets, and time to do it all again.
Yay.

Good luck with yours.

Update: I finished pinning all 8 cylinders this weekend and was able to start the Rover today. I'm happy to say that the tick is in fact gone. I'll try and report back after I get some miles on it but I'm pretty happy about the results. I did this work with the engine in the vehicle, but it would be much easier to do on an engine stand for sure. Next up is the leaking valve cover gaskets.

Did you do the PCV mod? If not then that might fix your VC gaskets.

Yes, that was the first mod I did, granted I haven't driven it much since then. I'll give the engine a good cleaning and run it for a while before deciding to replace or not.
