I have a large oil leak coming from the front bottom of my 2004 HSE Discovery 2 with 140k miles. I thought it must be the front seal behind the crank/harmonizer pulley. Attached are pictures. I recently replaced that seal and just drove it around and am still having a massive leak. Everything was sprayed off and cleaned after the seal change as well.
Can anyone help diagnose?
This is during change of the seal This is after the seal was changed and 10 min of driving around.
Is there a write up on that install somewhere? Cuz I just took the old one out and put a new one in flush to the metal with a block of wood and a whole cut in the wood. Wasn’t sure if it needed to go in farther or not.
I’m fairly certain it’s just the same seal that’s leaking again does anyone know how far it needs to be in and do I need to replace it now with a new one or can I use the same one?
Post a photo of your harmonic balancer shaft OD. You may have a big groove. Also, you need to do the PCV mod. Do a search. Is the back of the balancer soaked in oil, or only the pan? A leak on the id of the seal will soak the balance and sling oil everywhere. A leak on the OD of the seal will only run down the pan.
Here is a picture of a front cover I removed from an engine. The seal is slightly below the face by about. 1/16th or so. Not sure if that’s the problem.
Last time I replaced my front main seal i drove it home until it bottomed and wouldn't go any further, looked about the same as the photo above. No leaks after 5,000 miles so far.
