Default 2004 neither shaft spinning

My 2004 disco started having the differential shifter slip out of high while driving, mainly decelerating. Then all of a sudden some terrible grinding and it wouldn’t drive. Runs fine, but put it in gear or reverse, terrible grinding sounds, and neither shaft will spin. This has to be a bad transfer case, right? Or could it be something else ?? Thanks y’all

I'm assuming you are referring to either drive shaft won't spin? Vs an axle shaft? But yes that certainly sounds like you roasted your t-case.

When was the last time the T Case was serviced or topped up with oil? They will do this after 100k miles without service...

Easy to drain the CDL case and check for metal frags. Not so easy to fill unless you have a good pump n hose....

And not easy to drain if you have an 03/04, haha. Still can't figure out how to get around that stupid crossbar so perfectly in the way.

Service should be checking and or changing the oil depending on mileage.

I bought one of those little water sprayers you pressurize to water plants with. Mine is 1/2 Gallon. Put the oil in the can pump it up and squeeze the trigger. I am going to do the same thing with the transmission oil service.

As above until you need it resealed. Not sure but I assume by prior experience for that to be about the third 60k fluid service interval..

I don't recall any difference between my '99 and my '03 when servicing the transfer case.

But back to the OP, it certainly sounds like the t-case is the problem.

Step back a minute. Are you sure it’s either in high or low range and fully engaged? A simple check, can you feel the shifter actually engaging between high-neutral-low or look underneath to make sure the linkage is connected and moving.
