Default 2WD vs 4WD

Hello all. First post, but I have been reading for a while now. In my searches I have been looking for posts that would answer my question with little luck.

Is it possible to switch to rear wheel drive without damaging the drive-train? I have read that by doing so, you are taking power meant for 4 wheels and cramming it into 2 (bad). but I have also read of people doing it and having no problems (yet).

So! Is it possible? If so, what needs to be done? Bad idea?

Thanky

Your 99 D2 has a CDL t/case so when off the road, you can have better control of the traction, but you can in no way swhich all the power to just 2 wheels unless you engage the CDL with one drive shaft removed and I don't know why you would want to do that.
Why are you wanting to do this?

I don't necessarily want to. I just want to know if it's possible. And would it eventually cause damage like I have read?
