i think you have to go to 411's to get the low end torque back.

I run 275 70 18's which turn out to be 33's and it feels fine to me. Ihave a 2003 se7 with the 4.6 and 110k on the clock. I did notice a little loss of acceleration but it still has plenty of power. I am never in a race against time so no need to speed around everywhere.

I've got 255/85R16 on my 2003. It's MUCH faster than my 68 horsepower Defender (with 7.50R16 XZL's). It is noticeably slower around town than before, but once you get moving it's fine.

I've thought about re-gearing, and if I ever do it, I would pick Ashcroft 4.12 or 4.37. The only reason I'd do the 4.37 would be in case I wanted to start cutting and run 35's at some point.

But I'm kind of thinking about just selling it the discovery.

285/75/16 guard dogs... there is a considerable seat of the pants slowdown, more so from the weight of the rubber then the size. you also lose turning radius and stopping distance increases a tad, youll notice the fade more on long downhills. it also changes the shift points, youll find it most annoying when going up hills or merging with traffic, youll often have to mash the pedal down abit more to remind the computer that you need to be accelerating and downshift haha. Youll also see a greater increase in "road wandering" depending on the tread and noise increase obviously... and if the alignment and balance isnt spot on, youll notice vibrations and steering pull earlier then with standard sized tires.

that all being said, its all livable... if you get on the gas she still merges pretty well, but mind you that that will cause an overall average increase in the workload (mpg drop <1.5-2mpg is what i saw switching>, temp increase, stress increase) so mind that your drivetrain from the motor to trans to shafts and axles should be in good or better condition.

if you are not going to do some serious offroading, putting them on would be fine in the meantime... and down the line you could always choose to go with 4.11's and hd axles so you dont snap **** in low gear on an incline trying to climb over somethin on the trails. street wise, this thing will swall small children potholes and curbs without a second glance and gives you a great ride height for visibility and added few inchs of ground/water clearance.

Thank you. I was considering getting a 3in lift and putting 33's on it so I wanted some ideas. I like the way 33in tires look and on smaller suv like the disco they would look great

Plan on gears, new diffs and if you are going to play hard, HD axles.

I dont mind the 33s on stock gearing, gears are in my future but i would rather have the 33 and take it easy than gears, axles, etc first and not have the cash for the tires....know what i mean?

I would say i wheel pretty hard and with a feather foot and low range i keep up with the jeep boys and still make it back home.

My plan was tires first just to get out and have some fun...next cash dump will be gears/locker/axles.

I sometimes dream of 33s, but after reading stuff like this I feel better about my 32s with a 2" lift. For all the extras you have to do to get an extra half inch of clearance and extra inch of suspension lift, I just can't justify it. If I ever upgrade what I have now it will be major like 35s and 4-5" of lift to just go all out. Plus I'm right under 6'9" total height at the roof bars. That allows me to get into most parking decks without problem. Any higher, and it starts to get iffy.

You'll be fine. I have friends that run 255/85/16's on their D2's with stock gearing and they do alright. Sure it will be a bit doggish but its livable.
You don't NEED gears, axles, etc. Esp not on a D2. The mods required to fit a 33" tire on a D2 are much less than on a D1.
I picked up some Ashcroft 4.12 gears for cheap. My original plan was to run 33's. That changed after I worked the Ashcroft gearing calculator.
Get this: I'll be closer to stock gearing range with 315/75/16 tires and 4.12's than I am now with 265/75/16's and 3.54 gears. So I bought the BFG KM2's in 315/75/16.
