Hi,I just bought a 2000 disco 4.0. with 90K It leaks like crazy out of of what it looks like a rear main seal . I want to pull the engine out and replace all the seals and gaskets that could be a problem . Is there a guide somewhere or can someone tell me please what should I all replace on the engine when is out of the car so I don't have problems in near future. Also I got the disco for 1000 bucks , it runs and starts good . New tire and battery. Is that a good deal ? pics attached Thanks
Well before you mess with engine figure out what is wrong with the back end, if you have ACE and air suspension that could set you back 1000.
Check the front end shock towers for rust out
Then get a ODB reader and find out what your actual engine temps are.
You need to do comprehensive review of that truck from front to rear - it may not be worth spending money on.
If you are going to pull the engine you may as well do a full rebuild, BUT you need to know the frame body etc is in good and useable shape
Now you scared me heheh. So you think there is a chance of this thing not being worth to fix with 90K on it , even if I do the work myself ? Thanks for the reply !
@Eutopia as long as the frame and body are good no with serious rust. Then doing the work yourself, is worth it.
You just want to know everything else is sound, engine work will set up you back a few 1000 so you need to be sure. The 3 points below are the big ones for me after bad rust, and you are looking at maybe 200-300 to check them all.
Checking engine running temps will let you know if there is a possible head gasket or block issue, if those are good the rest is simple.
Do simple cheap stuff drain and the fluid in the diffs and transfer case check the colour, is there a lot of silver or it is really milkshaked up you may have to address them.
Drain and replace the transmission fluid, mostly because it probably has never been done, if it does not smell burnt and looks good you can check that off.
Also, it’s not very likely to be the rear main seal leaking. Get an inspection camera up into the bell housing inspection hole at the bottom (3 bolts). It far more likely that your valve covers are leaking.
$1000 could be a great deal if the frame is good as stated above.

@Eutopia looks a not too bad, check the back really well that is worst area, spend 1/2 an hour with a wire wheel on a drill and clean it up, you want to anyway and hit with some paint. The section on your 3rd image all the way down to where it levels out and about a foot beyond.
