Default 4.6 conversion

I have heard of 4.6 conversions on pre 03 discoverys. is this difficult or is it plug and play. do you need a different ecu etc. just curious, I need a new engine so I figured this would be a good time to upgrade.

Oh mine is an 02 with the 4.0. is it as simple as just getting the short clock and swapping everything else over or is there more involved such as sensors and ecu re-mapping. Thanks

Yes, it's that simple. There are plenty of accounts of people doing this, I know dweb has some if you search.

Wow that is easy. I'll be telling land rover to order me a 4.6 small block then. Thanks.

Why buy a new one, get a good low mileage used one?

Well the dealership is going to pay for some of it not all of it and they want Land Rover to do it. I am going to see if we can do it at the shop I work at to save some cash. I am still looking into a source but I really would rather go with a re-built engine or a new one, I guess because I am traumatized by this whole experience. then I won't have to worry about what the previous owner did or cleaning out carbon sludge etc. I think it will be worth it in the long run. I plan on keeping her for a long time so I figure I might as well do her right. So there is no ecu upgrade change or anything huh, just swap everything over to the 4.6 block? I hope land rover will go for that. I'm sure they'll say no way. I can get an engine with a good warranty, I just have to convince the dealership to let my shop do it rather than letting land rover do it. That will save us both money.

Well I had just come home from work and got cleaned up to meet my brother for dinner. I got in started it and it had a very loud clacking/knocking noise and the engine would barely run. I waited and started it again and the clacking continued but was nowhere near as bad as the first time. I figured it was a colapsed lifter or a lifter had lost its prime since I had changed the oil the day before with mobile one high mileage full synthetic and a mobile one filter. I figured the oil had cleaned some sludge and maybe blocked the lifter. Eventualy after a couple of minutes the clacking noise subsided and went away but I was left with one cylinder dead. I checked the plugs and they were fine ( I had them changed less than a month prior) checked compression and #2 failed the compression checxk miserably so I figured maybe the piston skirt broke or maybe a sleeve came loose. Land Rover has it now because the dealership i got it from agrees to pay for some of it. see my post about clakcing noise/transmission problems.

Glad to hear that the dealer is going to help pay for it. You lucked out there. You must have just bought it?
