Default 4hp24 question

Guys, I pulled the pump off the front of the transmission today to change a leaky gasket and saw what looks like abnormal wear on this part. Should I change it out?

For reference the transmission has about 230k miles (mostly freeway) on it and was shifting fine. Fluid came out dark but no sediment and did not smell burned. I have the engine out right now and don’t want to reinstall it looks like I’m on the way to failure. Thanks!

That's some pretty knarly wear, but I don't see the clutch plates that are making the wear on the drum.

Default Wear

Have not pulled out the clutch pates, have no idea how they look. Never really noticed any negative driving issues. Can I get just this part? Am I due for a rebuild? What do those run these days?

The transmissions are super durable so not a huge demand for used units. Honestly I would get a used with lower mileage and install.

Man, that's smoked!

As a rule I generally don't install used trannys, but I am with extinct - D2 Trans is pretty solid and I would use a used Trans in a Disco.

Forgive my ignorence on this but, what is this part and what do you guys see that shows the wear? (I have never pulled a transmission, so I am blind to what I am looking at)

We are looking at the sawtooth marks on the fingers. My thought was they should not be there and it should be a perfectly smooth surface…….turns out I was correct 😅 if I wasn’t doing an ls swap I’d be tempted just to send it and see what happens, but I really don’t want to risk it with added hp and torque. Anyone have a lead on a low mileage hp24 in the phoenix region?

also, anyone have an idea what would I have caused this type of failure? I know I’m not the only guy with 200k plus on their rig. Could I have something going on in the transfer case? Misaligned bushing? Bad ring and pinion? This seems a rather uncommon issue apparently…this disco was a pavement princess when I got it from the PO, he had never used the diff lock or low range. I’m running 32” tires and do about 95% of my driving on the road, don’t really think it’s a driver issue. Could there be an issue in the t-case? Or just bad luck 😂

Truth of the matter is, this could be a common wear spot in zf 4 speeds. They are torn apart so rarely that at least I personally wouldn't know. I know 4l60 gm transmissions, it can be somewhat common in. Maybe 1/4 of them I've had apart have wear similar to this and the part gets replaced.

Someone on one of the UK forums may have a better idea since they are more plentiful and therefore probably rebuilt more often.

Yeah, starting to lean that way, looking on Google for parts shows similar wear on lower mileage parts.

just don’t know where I would get replacement…….

also rebuild kits for this seem to be non-existent
