Default 75K Service Questions

My 94 Disco 1 just turned over 75k miles. I changed the oil last night using Mobile 1 fully synthetic 10/w30 and Mobile 1 oil filter, and changed the air filter with an oem LR one. I checked my transmission fluid and the dip stick is bone dry (not good!!!!!!). Here are my questions.

1) Is it difficult to drain and add transmission fluid? I have to do this today so I need to knowwherethe drain plug and fill plug areon the transmission? What kind of fluid should I use and how much, I'm thinking 12 quarts.

2) How much gear oil do I need to put into the diff's after I drain them? Do I just fill it up to where it is almost coming out of the top fill plug?

3) This weekend I plan on doing a radiator flush. There is green coolant in the radiator now? Should I stick with the green fluid or go with the orange? After I do the flush, do I put in a gallon of coolant to a gallon of water? And, do I fill the radiator through the top plug on the radiator or through the resivoir?

4) I'm bought a set of Bosch Platinum 4 plugs yesterday and I am ordering a set of Magnecor wires and a new cap and rotor today. Any tips on changing the plugs and wires?

Sorry for the long post, just want to do everything right so I can keep my Disco running good.

Default RE: 75K Service Questions

First, only use a factory cap and rotor, never aftermarket. Call Tony at 650-365-4145, he has the best price on the 8mm Magnecor wires.
Because of your truck age, you are not doing a 75K service, you need to do a major.
Here is my list for the service you need, follow it and you will love the results.

This is the parts list for a 60,000 mile service or a high mileage used truck, the way I do it.
1 Oil filter, K&N 3001 or Mobil 1
1 Air filter
6 Qts of engine oil
12 Qts of ATF
7 Qts of 80/90W synthetic gear oil
1 Qt of synthetic Brake fluid
2 Qts of synthetic Power steering fluid
2 Gallons of OAT, orange coolant
1 Bottle of Lucas Power Steering additive
1 Bottle of Lucas Transmission additive
1 Can of Spray Carb. Spray
1 Can Of Brake cleaner
8 Spark Plugs, I use Bosch Platium Plus 4's
1 Set of Magnacor 8mm plug wires
1 Serpentine belt
2 Bottles of SeaFoam gas additive
1 T/Stat

60,000 Mile Service or Major Service for High Mileage Used Vehicle just purchased

Bleed the brakes
Flush and change the power steering fluid adding one bottle of additive
Service the tranny adding one bottle of additive
Change the coolant and t/stat
Do an engine flush before changing the oil
Do an induction cleaning
Clean the throttle body
Add fuel additive to full gas tank
Change both of the diffs fluid
Change the t/case oil
Replace the plugs and wires
Replace the air filter
Lube all the drive shaft grease fitting including the 2 slip shafts
Do full inspection of brakes, hoses, bushings etc.

Hopefully I didn't leave anything out.

Tony is who I am ordering the wires cap and rotor from. I am following your list to a T. I have it tacked up above my work bench. I just need to know how to replace the transmission fluid. I have to do that today. Thanks Mike.

How does the tranny fluid smell.
As hard as it is to change the fluid, I would recommend a drain and fill twice, maybe 10000 mile apart otherwise you have to drop the cross member and the "Y" pipe just to pull the pan.
If you just drain, you will use less then 6 quarts.

Not sure how the fluid smells. The dip stick for the tranny fluid under the hood is bone dry. Where is the drain plug for the tranny fluid, and where do I fill it up with fluid?

Fill thru the tube and drain thru the pan.
Why have you let your ATF level go so low, you looking to buy a new tranny?

LOL. Definetly not looking to buy a new tranny. I've just had the Disco for a couple of months and the guy I bought it from was the original owner. He kept all of the service records and was very meticulous with the truck. I know now to check the fluid levels often!! Is the pan located under the transmission, and how many quarts will I need, and should I go with synthetic fluid or does it matter?? If you can't tell I'm very new to this. Thanks Mike.

When i had my engine swaped. The tranny filter was changed, flushed and filled. new gasket, same with oil and necoolant as well. I now want my attention on the brakes, which i'm following what was said. I'm asking, with what was done to my engine when it was put in. It should be pretty good to go?
