90,000 mile check up questions.
Hi all,
I purchased my truck; a 2000 Discovery II with 78,000 miles last year.
Immediately I replaced:
-2 rotars/2calipers and all brake pads
-New steel rear bumper
-all tires
- front right tie rod
-intake manifold for engine.
-Replaced suspension with a Terrra Firma 2 inch kit from Lucky8 (shocks as well)
….also replaced the headliner (thanks to the forums!…and my stereo head unit…thanks to the forums!)
It's in the shop now with The 3 Amigos and Service engine soon light…
I'm at about 89,000 miles. It's been evaluated by a LR dealer (83,000 miles) who said the gaskets were going to need to be replaced and recommended a new tie rod.
I took it to another smaller reputable local shop….
Im replacing:
Radiator hoses
Checking head gaskets-related to slow coolant leak=replacing coolant once a month.
Having other tie rod replaced
Replacing Serpentine Belts
Fixing Driver Side Door (won't open from outside)
Having other rotars/calipers and all brakes checked again
Fluids flushed
Having my 3 amigos investigated and fixed (looked at forum "fix-it" link already)
Front Drive shaft is being rebuilt
Spark plugs changed….
Any other suggestions for service or maintenance while it's there?

yes, those are what the mechanic was looking at working on
----I see in your sig you replace your brake fluid and coolant every 2 years is this sorta standard? (Im still learning bear with me).

Most manufacturers including LR recommend changing the brake fluid every 2 years or so. LR says every 30k miles or 24 months (whichever sooner) for the D2. Having worked in a shop, I know firsthand the problems with old brake fluid and ABS systems. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air (the master cylinder cap may not be 100% air tight). Moisture causes rust. Particles of rust in an ABS system cause problems.
It only takes a few quarts of fluid and a few hours if you gravity drain the fluid, and even less time if you have a scanner that can electronically bleed them, so it is cheap insurance.
I know how fragile our cooling systems are, so I do that every two years also. LR says 45k miles or 36 months whichever sooner.

If you haven't already I'd also inspect or replace:
Water pump
Fan/viscous clutch assembly
Any vacuum leaks (rover rubber/plastic hoses deteriorate quickly)
Rotoflex at rear diff (if applicable)...not sure if MY 2000 has this.
Thermostat (preferably the gray 180*)

I'm guessing I'm at the mileage for your list as well? --I think they got the new thermostat on there too. thanks for the heads up.
How about the oil pump and pan-How long can I expect from them?
With an oil pump should I replace the whole thing or just gaskets?

Hard to say on the oil pump. In the past when I've replaced oil pumps it was during a full engine rebuild (other makes, not Rover). Those vehicles also had oil pressure gauges rather than the "idiot light".
If it were mine, I'd stop at this point, drive it and see how things shake out before I spent any more money on it.
