95-96 Discovery
Hi All,
After a horrible experience with a 2003 Freelander I just can't shake the Land Rover bug. I am thinking about buying a 95-96 Discovery. After having the Freelander and learning about all the problem with that model, I'm a little gun shy.
Should I be worried about buying a 95-96 Discovery? Any major issues that seem to plague these?
Thanks!
Justin

you're in the right year range
'97s are good too
minor electrical problems, o2 sensors (as with any car), small oil leaks, MAF sensor (if damaged by previous owner), fuel filter, door lock actuators, sunroof and A/C drains, all things that can be fixed easily and cheaply (shy of the sensor sets).
I'm new to the disco world and have come to the conclusion that this vehicle is somewhat of a refuge for me from the monotonous daily life. good luck on the hunt for a good vehicle...
when buying one from a private owner, look for the check engine light. if there is one on, take it to auto zone or somewhere similar and have the codes read... some are much harder to fix and far more damaging than others.

As cheap as Discos are spend a few extra bucks and buy a little newer one. One are you going to be using it for, do you plan on much wheeling?
There are some, few but some, 97 and 98 D1's still out there if you look for them, that will have really low mileage on them, that is the direction I would go.

The 1996 to 1999 Disco I's are OBDII ready makes things easier.
But Justin you must ask yourself what do I need and than what do I want.
At this time you can buy a Disco I cheap, bad fuel mpgs most have been neglected.
Do you need a low range, you had a Freelander.
I have owned 4x4's sense 1986 and have found even on a old one that has been taken care of
you will still need to keep it maintained not just a LR.
The only things I have found that is different that other 4x4's is the rubber seals, hoses ,window
seals ect will need to be replaced, and the mirror.
It does have quirks the rear windows like to think about going down but only after 5 mins,
the brake light switch if it goes out will not let you out of park.
The shift handle for the trans, the nut that holds it on will loosen up and you will not get the key
out.
Its little things that are simple if you know what to look for.
So my advice is look the Disco over find a LR expert to look at it, sometimes the LR expert will know
of some good LR's out there, and get ONE.

Thanks for all the advice guys!
I am mainly just looking for a truck that I can drive occasionally on hunting/outdoor type trips. Something I can throw the lab in the back of and cruise. Not a lot of 4-wheel driving, other than through a muddy field once in awhile. I have a car for my daily driving.
I just love the Land Rover essence you all know there's something special about owning one. I don't mind small problems. With my Freelander I loved it but it kept having serious engine issues.
Now if I can just find the right one....
Anyone know good sites to check on line for used Disco's?
