I decided to go ahead and remove the engine. I got to the point where I'm trying to undo the bolts that bolt the transmission to the engine. How on earth do you get them loose? I have a 9/16 wrench, with a longer wrench hooked on the end of it and it's at such an awkward angle that it keeps slipping off the bolt. I'm afraid I'm going to tear up the bolt head.

I have squirted it with PB Blaster a couple of times, still no luck.

Any tips?

Thanks,
Roger

I pulled up on the engine and removed the rubber mounts, and I lowered the engine onto the metal mounts. Now I have a better angle to get at the bolts on the top of the transmission. But I still can't get it off.

There is a lot of play between the wrench and the bolt, and when I really pull on it, the wrench pops off the bolt head. I tried a couple of different wrenches.

Thanks,
Roger

Nice. Make sure you have the free RAVE manual.

Got the first piston out. I'm about to pull an air hose across the yard from the workshop to get the impact wrench going and break the bolt loose on the crank shaft pulley. May be taking the block to a machine shop this week.

Thanks,
Roger

Dude, even the impact won't break it loose... it is a standard thread (lefty loosey) isn't it?

Thanks,
Roger

Edit: I got a second pair of hands to hold the engine still and I put a fence post over my ratchet and it broke loose. Yes it's a standard thread.

I took the block and the heads to the machine shop yesterday. He's going to re-hone the cylinders and measure to see if that will be enough. I had one bent valve, also.

Now I've got ants in my pants waiting to hear back from him. While I was there he asked if I could get oversized pistons. He couldn't get parts from his normal suppliers. He said he'd never worked on a Land Rover engine. I mentioned about replacing the cylinder sleeve and he didn't seem to go for that.

Hopefully the honing will be enough.

Thanks,
Roger

Apparently the honing was not enough. 4 of the cylinders are oval. He said if I could find some oversize pistons, I might get away with boring out the cylinders 20 thousandths. He said the liners are quite thin. And he thought the block had been cast with the liners in place. It would be around $800 to replace the liners, plus the cost of the liners.

My question is, if he replaced the liners, would it still be out of round due to pressing them into an oval hole?

So... anyone know if I can get oversize pistons for this? Would the sleeve then be too thin with a 20 rebore? I haven't found oversize liners yet as SpdDemon426 suggested.

Maybe it would be better to look for a cheap used engine to rebuild?

Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Roger

OK, I found these on ebay.

What if I had him rebore all cylinders 20 thousandths? Does that sound like a good plan?

Thanks,
Roger
