96???
when i got my trk, i was told by the owner that it was a '96. but as i read along the forum i got confused. one thing is the codes. according to this site http://www.obd-codes.com/faq/do-i-ha...ii-vehicle.php if my vehicle is 96+ it would automatically ODB-II compliant. but i dont see code sensors anywhere in my trk. so when i read about codes, DUHHHH.
i'm trying to upload a picture of my trk here so you guys can see. hope it works

I think if you call up a dealership and give the vin, they can tell you anything you need to know about it. I've done this to know what was factory on mine, because i was told it was a series II from the seller, but of course it wasnt. I'd give that a shot. And while your on the phone with them, if you have your factory radio still. Ask them for the radio code. If your battery dies, your theft will activate and you will need to input the code to use the radio again. They can give you the code and you can keep it safe.

just remembered...
i have a 3.9L engine. does that automatically mean that is was manufactured within '95?

1996 has a 4.0 on the top of the intake.
Look under the hood for the emission tag it will tell you what year that it is.
Look at the drivers door jam, it will have the date of manufacture and it must be compliante with that model year OBD codes and emissions and crash tests and what nots.
So if it was put together December '95 as a '96 model then it must meet all '96 requirements.

i just checked. the sticker is there but the writings are almost all in arabic. but the model number is very clear - 1996. the thing is, i looked in the pedals where the 16-way data link connector is supposed to be, and its not there. also, i have a 3.9L engine.
the reason i'm so concerned is i'm buying parts for a 96. like a couple of days ago, i bought and installed a stepper motor for a 96. it was supposed to solve my idling probs but it didn't. and the magnecor ignition set i'm going to buy has different specs for the 95 and 96 or at least they are on different categories (according to roverconnection.com). i don't wanna waste money on the wrong set. and in line with this, should i go for the 8mm wires or the 7mm will do?

OK, now I better understand what your problem is.
I hate to say it, but you might want to run a Carfax report and see if your trk was ina major accident and when they repaired it they used part of a '96 body, everything else leans towards a '95 or older.
'96 was the first year for the 4.0 which they used until '03 when the 4.6 was introduced to the Disco.
I would use the 8mm wires.
You have to go buy your engine size when you order them, if you have the 3.9 with a distribitor cap then that is what you have to order.
Now, the 3.9, 4.0 and 4.6 are the same engine. The 3.9 has a distribitor cap and rotor, the 4.0 has electronic ignition and is just ever so slightly larger displacement and then the 4.6 is bigger yet, but they all use the same block.
It is possable that somebody put a 3.9 intake plenum on a 4.0, but since you dont have the data link connector...
