Default 97 Disco Tdi, some purchase help please

Hi guys,

I'm in the process of purchasing my first Discovery.
I've found a 97 Disco, Tdi, auto for $10500 AUD in my area.
After reading through a lot of the posts here, it seems I could be buying into a constant maintenance money pit vs. the relatively cheap purchase price.

Could anyone help me with some points I should be looking out for when buying a Disco of this vintage and type. Sorry I haven't the kilometres of the vehicle at present. Or even if there is a model i should try and avoid.

Cheers and thanks for any advice

yes, but i dont know the conversion rate. if its s good deal i would go for it, personaly. its safe to say that 85% of LR problems are electrical, being a deisel theres obviously no worries in that department. other than that all you have to do is take good care of it, and it will probably take good care of you.

whichever way you do decide to go, enjoy.

Yes, that is Australian Dollars. It's also very cheap for a car here.... Most others of that vintage are $17000 to $23000.

I'm confident its a cheap price and amazingly its only 15minutes from my home. It was just parked on the side of the road with a For sale in the window.

And from reading here, i realise the Deisel is quite eccomical. As the V8 over here is Very Very thirsty. So much so, i wouldn't buy one.
But i'm a little concerned on buying an 8 year old Tdi without hearing some views from people that know more about them than me.
I was more wondering if the car is fairly bullet proof, or if they suffer from any common problems? seals, belts, bearings, poor brakes, a weak model, etc

Personally i'd prefer it be Manual than an Auto, as i just don't like Autos that much. But perhaps people here have good things to say about thier Autos? Any ideas?

Thanks for your help guys

i don't know much about LR diesels, but we have a 2000 powerstroke and i think that thing will never die. we have never had any problems with it, and it has 160000 miles on it. (256000 km) it runs great. i have a high opinion on diesels. also, a diesel burns 90% of its fuel at a time, a gasoline burns 70%. thanks to EGR valves all will eventually get burned.
