Default 98 disco

Im not sure what to do. Ive been looking to buy a disco for a while now and i just havent found one that feels right. Right now i have my sights on a 98 LSE with only 65k on it. The guy is asking $8995 on his add and the Kelly Blue Book is $8200. I spoke with him today and he said he is willing to go down to $7500. That being said, the rig is in great shape from what i have seen. It drives well and is very quiet. The interior is in good shape and they also offer a 60 day warranty. Does this sound like a decent deal. I havent been able to find many good deals and this is probably the cleanest one Ive seen. The more comments the better, Thanks

you need to see what work needs to be done to it.. my guess is head gaskets, front drive shaft rebuild. If i were you i would offer him $5500 max. I got my 99D2 with 105k for $3000. with that said it needed head gaskets, valley pan gasket, front drive shaft, plugs and wires, MAF and oil pan gasket. Try buying from a person rather than a dealer. It will save you a few G's

Get ready for opinions.

I think it's worth $5k if it's beautiful, add $50--$100 for every maintenance receipt since '98 (for that truck).

I bought my '97 SE7 six years ago for $3900 & it had 67K, seemed in great shape.

Unbeknownst(is that a word?) to me, it had been neglected.

I do all my own repairs, but I'd guess it would have cost me another $3k up to today
and I'm still not satisfied.

This is not accounting for any aftermarket stuff.

a 60 day warr isn't any big deal, so it should be free after they come down on the price into the $5k range.

That's my honest opinion
You may be pleasantly surprised if you just walk away & say you'll think about it.
don't call him back for 2 days.

luck,greg

I would say $5500 is a god price for a pristine 98. Depends on your area, though. I got my 97 for $3K 4 years ago.

Plan on doing head gaskets. They won't absolutely fail, but you should be ready to bite a $1500 bullet. Your front shaft is ok, that is only D2's. Look at the major service sticky. Plan on doing everything on that list right when you get it.

Well, that's about as low of mileage you'll find for a 98. That's 5,450mi/yr. That should make it super clean. If it's THAT clean, then I don't think the KBB pricing model fits as well. I doubt the head gaskets need changing at this point. In fact, a lot of things probably won't need changing for a while. 98's are easy to maintain. Not as much finicky electronics. You could look at it another way: If normal price is $5,000 for a higher mileage Disco that you might need to perform a number of repairs and upgrades, then you might be better off paying a tad more for a lower unit that you, hopefully, shouldn't need to put a whole lot into for a while. Of course nobody can say what sort of things might crop up ...and when.

We can for sure tell you that if you buy one that has 125k on it, you could easily spend $1,500-2,500 on it just fixing deferred maintenance if you do the repairs yourself ...and doesn't even count your time.

Good luck,

I bought my truck 3 yrs ago, it was a one owner and had 152,change and it blue booked at $5800.
They had $6200 in the window.
It had been sitting on the lot (the guy who was selling it was neighbors with a used car lot owner) for 6 months, never moved.
I drove it, pointed out its flaws and I got it for $4500 out the door, thats tax included, $4500 cash.
Not to bad of a deal if you ask me.
So dont be afraid to low ball the guy and walk away if he does not respond well.

Pancho bought a '95 with 50,000 miles on it last year, he is a forum member but has not been on much lately.
It was a one owner.

Thanks everyone. Those were kind of the answers I expected. Ive honestly been looking at these in the Seattle area for about a year and there really isnt any deals like you guys are throwing out. Ive definitely seen them for that price but with a 120 to 150k on them. From what I can tell, there really isnt any issues with it. I do need to do a deeper inspection first. The closest thing im finding to the $5k range is a '95 with 95k on it and they are asking $6. Is it because of the area i live in? Thanks again everyone

you are better off buyin one in cali and driving it up. save you some serious cash and it might have less rust if its stayed out of the northwest.
