Default 98 disco ,hit bump shaky front end

i twent to the web site for the disco 2 series was great,
Spike do you know if a detailed repair web site for disco 1 ? is out there ?

I have posted this question before and still am trying to resolve the issue my self, I spent a ton of $ on tie rod ends (stock) sterring stabelizer, pan yard bushing , shocks. ect.
I also heve removed some shims front end rotating ball to increase the pressure on the big ball on each end of the axle, I cant recall the exact name , however on top and bottom of this end ball is 2 bushing / & small bearing that have shims under them , i would assume to keep this all tight , but able to move when steering in moved. I achieved some sucess removing a few shims , however its getting bad again after a few months.

When Im traveling down the highway i can feel the bumps in the road through my steering wheel . If im traveling around 50 mph or more and hit a bump in the highway the front end starts shaking bad and i have to slow down fast and maybe move steering back and forth to get it to stop. I want some detailed instructions on whats bad and try to fix this myself. I dont have a rover shop anywhere around and could not afford their repair bill. any advise would be great , cell # if you would like to call me is 812-430-5744, Scott

Hum, you have replaced most everything except the steering gear box. There has to be a lot of free play for it to do what you are describing. Where is the free play? Got to find it.

Default front end wobble / shacking front end

yes i have tightend up the steering play maybe 1 turn , i didnt waht to get to crazy on over tighening this. From a continued review on this forum , the problem i think lies in what i need to refer to is the swivel ball on each end of front axle. One guy referred to this as the death wobble , and when it happend to the wife a few week ago , it scared her from not driving this disco any more until i fix it.

I'm hoping to get a web site with some detailed instuctions on what parts i need and step by step instructions on how to fix.

Really sounds like swivel pin preload is too light. You can get a rebuild kit from the usual suspects.
This is a good manual to keep in the car, http://www.amazon.com/Discovery-regi...1547818&sr=8-4

That kind of free play should be easily recognized by shaking the wheel with your own weight. Like getting in front of the wheel and shacking it in and out. I understand from the thread that the swivel pin has been adjusted already. What kind of free play do you have on the steering wheel, how many degrees can you move the steering wheel before the tires actually move?

Default free- play in the steering wheel

seems to move the wheels as soon as i turn the steering wheel.. i cant feel much play, i may try and crank the steering bolt another round and see if i notice any more control, another area i wondered about was. When i replaced the steering stabelizer i bought a stock one , i wonder if i would notice any more control if i purchased and after market universal dual steering stabelizer from off rsome off road company? like Summit ?

Default death wobble / reply to Tom Rowe

i was hoping you would respond , yes i will check into rebuild kit , Im assuming the rebuild kit is nothing more than a new bushing/ bearing and shims. Is it possible i need to go deeper and do the bigger repair and replace the swivel ***** , Im wondering how big of a job that is , I want to fix this problem once and for all , so far my own labor is cheaper than anyting i can afford. I do wish however there was some good step by step instruction for replacing the swivel ***** along with new bushing/ bearings.

I just posted this link on another thread. I have no experience with this so I may be talking out of my rear.

If you are running stock wheels and tires the stock stabilizer will be fine. Something doesn't add up here. It seems to me that you have covered all the "probable" causes, now is time to start checking all the "possible" causes, and that includes suspension, bushings, frame, etc.
