I recently purchase a 98 land rover discovery. On the way driving home, the rover started over heating. When i popped the hood, i noticed that the overtank flow had a hole, so i replaced it. I also replace the thermostat. Now i see a small leak coming from the back of the engine, adjacent to where the ac water drips.... Anybody have an idea what causes a leak back there?????????????????

 

If it's coming from the backside of the engine, and not the heater core/hoses, then it's either an intake manifold gasket or head gasket

 

what is the mileage on your truck? make sure you do the 60k service sticky in the disco section from Mike.

 

It has 92,000 miles on it (hilltoppersx).... How can i tell which one it is (kenk)

 

the coolant tank hole is a common problem with your model (disco 1), the theromstat should be replaced every 40-60k depending on who you talk to. Most likely with your mileage the head gaskets have begun to fail. if you are handy with a wrench then i suggest getting the RAVE manual, just do a search on the forum. its the workshop manual for your truck. the gasket kit from atlantic british is around $150. if you bring it to a mechanic it will be about $1400. If you bring it to a dealer it will be $3000.

 

Question why would it leak all the way back there if its head gasket... And how much time to i have to fix it

 

you can clean everything off and get it pressure tested to see where the leak is coming from. even so when the engine is apart the kit comes with plenty of gaskets. i did mine with the valley pan gasket, head gasket and air intake gasket. if it is all apart you might as well replace as many as you can because if something else is weaker it will begin to fail when you put it all back together again.

 

So clean everthing off from underneath the rover.... And look for leaks.... Question... If the car is in one place it doesnt leak but when you drive around and park it drips?? Whats that mean

 

When you drive, the cooling system builds up pressure and leaks. Once all the pressure is gone, no more leak, 'til you drive again.

It's difficult to tell between an intake and head gasket as theres not much room to see back there. You could have it proffesionally pressure tested. Most people though just plan on head gaskets,expecting the worst.

 

Are you loosing coolant?
You replaced the overflow bottle and refilled the system, are you still loosing coolant?
Where do you live? Have you been using the a/c?
