Default 99 D2 Radio From Hell:

Okay so the other day I removed the OEM cargo door panel, removed the subwoofers, and installed an aluminum panel and called it a day. Well the next day I decided to take my 99 D2 into town. I hoped it and cranked it up only to have the radio instantly come on and no matter what I did none of the controls would work and I couldn't turn it off. I got home and was going to diagnose it, but we were about to have a really nasty storm hit so I went inside.

Well about 30min later the storm was producing 60MPH winds and quarter sized hail so I needed to go park it. Well as I went for my keys I heard music playing from outside. Sure enough without the key in the ignition or anything the radio was on just a jamming out. Once again not a single radio button worked. I parked it, and decided to just pull the fuse to the radio and boom it went out.

So I ran inside just as the storm hit. We lost power and about 30min later once again I heard music outside and sure enough there it was jamming out again and this time no key or fuse and it still somehow powered up on it's own... I had to disconnect the battery just to kill it!

Well this morning I removed it from the dash and inspected it. I got it to work normal for all of 3 minutes then it went completely none responsive DOA on me. I went out to my 03 Parts D2 and pulled it's none H&K Stereo. My 99 D2 has the H&K Stereo and I heard they are NOT compatible with each other at all.

Well I compared the P/N's and sure enough they're different, but plug wise they were identical. I slapped it into my 99 D2 and it works perfectly.. Not a single option doesn't work, all the speakers work, and it sounds great. Also the possessed radio BS is gone.

I have no clue what happened to the 99 D2's original stereo, but it died in a super weird n crazy way. For everyone that says you can't slap a None H&K Stereo into an H&K equipped D2 I'm gonna have to call BS as mine is working great.

My factory radio did the same thing sort of. I did not have the gremlin random jam sessions but it would suddenly be non responsive and no buttons would work. Sometimes this happened when I had the radio cranked. I ended up disconnecting the radio.
I wish I could tell you I had a fix for it but all it did for me was justify spending a couple hundred on a new single din stereo with a usb charger and a mini headphone port. I am now much happier.

Yeah it was a flashback to my Lucas Electronic days for sure!! I was just amazed at how without the key or fuse it still wanted to jam out. I'm all good though after slapping in my none H&K Headunit out of my 03 parts D2 in place of my 99 D2 H&K Headunit. No more weird loss of controls or it coming on by itself and everything functions as it should.

I was honestly just amused with it and it refusing to just die 100%.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Almost spit my coffee out on this one.

I have a similar one for you: my rear wiper just goes on every now and then- ironically when it is raining, but I am pretty sure there are no rain sensitive rear window on this thing- and does a swipe or 2 and stops. Works perfect with the switch and washer works. It just comes on every now and then. I think it's funny. My wife says it's like her old BMW where the headlight washers- according to the owners manual- would come on at "pre determined" intervals. Who knew what they were: never once in the US, but once we had the car in Germany, came on frequently, but with no rhyme or reason.

As long as the car doesn't burn down, it's kinda funny.

Now that I think of it. Maybe. But I have seen it when in drive. It's usually right when I start the car.

weird. I know it's supposed to come on in reverse if you have the front wipers on. Quirky though

Glad I didn't cross the streams on this one haha!!! If that theme song had been playing OMG that would have been hilarious.

Yeah on a D2 it's normal for it to swipe a few times while in reverse. I normally get scared to death like I hit something as I hardly use the rear wiper and when it does do it's thing in reverse that blade is as dry as the Sahara it sounds truly awful until it makes a few passes.

The stereo auto jam session stuff was just so funny. I mean no fuse, no key and it's rocking out to Pop Evil or Metallica all on it's own (it was stuck on a Rock & Roll station). I spent more time trying to find info on the headunit and if a none H&K headunit would work in the H&K headunit's place. Every single post/thread I found say absolutely incompatible. I pulled both units & yes the part numbers were totally different. However all the plugs and wiring matched up 100%. I said to heck with it and if it blows up I'll just go aftermarket (I would miss the SE7 rear audio controls for the little ones). Plugged it in and it works perfectly and I honestly think it sounds better!

What I think is compatible/non compatible is not the headunits, but from the AMP down to the speakers. From that point all the speakers, tweaters, and AMP are different. I'm pretty much 100% certain from the headunit to the AMP = they're all the same.

Ah well then, it must be working correctly. Cool! That goes in line with discovering yesterday that the front windows are one touch down. It's the simple things...

You win for cool Roversim of the day, though.
