Default 99 disco II engine go boom....options??

did a thermostat and control, then lost cylinder #4--coolant getting in---still runs but dealer says i need a new short block wich is more than a new longblock with heads???!! ok, lets talk options--conversions??? i hear alot about 350 conversion but know nothing about whats involved. for the money the dealer wants for a new swap i think i should get a supercharged engine!
im thinking ill scan the yards for a gently used shortblock or runner, any ideas--secrets--things to look for or look out for?

I don't really understand why a short block would be more than a long block unless the long block is used. I think by the time you d the conversion to a 350 and beef up or replace the rest of the drivetrain to handle the power you'll come out cheaper sticking with a Rover engine. Check with local salvage yards for an engine you can just swap in.

forgot to mention that the dealer said i dropped the the sleeve in the # 4 cylinder.
as soon as the rain stops here ill pull the head off that side to confirm. the kid i bought it from replaced both head gaskets and the radiator then drilled out the thermostat so hes been chasing this for a while i guess. will any other engine fit my discovery II (99) like the 4.6 or even the disco I 4.0?

Any of those you mentioned will fit. You will have to change the front cover and camshaft sprocket from you D2 if you go with a D1 block (96 and up) but I would suggest getting a D2 (bosch) shortblock. You can easily swap a 4.6 into yours.

A 350 will be too heavy and have way too much power for your driveline........

Go for a 4.6 and call it done. Make sure the engine you put in is the same year or newer than your truck if you live somewhere that has emissions. You may get away with an older engine but if they decide to check close you'll be sitting on a vehicle you can't register because it won't pass emissions and therefore is not legal on public streets.

As mentioned already go for a 4.6 for a little extra power but forget the Chevy, too much weif=ght, torques, you would need to change the tranny and diffs to handle the torque and the suspension for the extra weight.

The 4.6 is a direct bolt in since the 4.0 and 4.6 are the same block. I believe you can use your 4.0 ECM with the 4.6 but someone else will have to confirm that.

bolts right up... No need for an ECM change on a short block

stupid question but here goes. So if i have a 4.0l block that needs to be rebuilt, can i just bore/stroke to a 4.6L. I don't see why you couldn't. and I have read on other forums that you can get cams and injectors for the LR 4.6L (performance). Will the computer correct?
