Default 99 series II

can someone post a pic if possible, of that lil' nipple that locks the transfercase on 99,2000 disco's? Do all 99's have this, and does this make the car act like say, a jeep cherokee or standard 4wd system, and does it affect traction control at all? Lastly, Why would landrover not make a control to switch on/off from inside the cabin?

Yes your 99 DII does have it, I dont have a pic, but Im sure someone does.
If you have the CDL engaged you will gain about 50% more traction, it turns off the electronic traction control and does it the "old fashion" way. I once engaged mine under the truck and was amazed at the preformance. I am now in the process of saving up for the kit that allows you to engage it from inside the truck. Here is a link to where you can purchase the kit yourself:

DII's do not climb as well as they should, but with CDL engaged that problem goes away. My friend has a Jeep GC and it climbed better than the disco... until I got under the truck and turned on CDL (the next time we went). That time, my disco got further than his jeep on the hill we always go head to head on.

Thanks camdisco.. it is hard to just do manually? do I need tools to do it.. I mean with the amount of wheeling that I'll do, it'll be rare that I'll need that level of grip, but it's nice to know it's there right?

Its not hard (if you know exactly where it is), but its HOT under there if you've just driven to the trail... I wore an extra long oven mit looking thing (i looked hilarious) to get my hand up there. All you need is a 10mm wrench, and the nipple only turns about 45* (to the right of the truck). Once the CDL is locked you may need to roll forward a few feet to get the light to illuminate on the dash. Same goes for when you turn it off.

If you do this, just make sure you turn it off, because if left on for on-road driving it can do some serious damage to your transfer case.

If you lock the CDL and start the engine it will cause the 3 amigo lights to turn on. This means that those systems are disabled. If you lock the CDL with the engine running you will have the combo of the TC and CDL.

wait, so the truck should me in 4lo, and then the engine and everything should be shut off (meaning key in my hand) and then I should turn the valve/nipple? And I'll know it's on because I'll get the 3 amigos right?

Sorry for all the stupid questions guys.. So this little nipple is called CDL? and I'll see a CDL pilot as well as others depending on whether I did it with the truck on, or off?

They're not stupid, I was in the same boat about a year ago. The nipple is what engages the CDL (center Diff. lock). What locking the center diff does is split the power evenly between the front and rear axles, hence the extra traction.

If you lock it with the engine running, you will have the combo of traction control and the CDL. Im pretty sure thats how most prefer it, but I need some backup on that.

When you have done it correctly there will be a light illuminated on the dash that looks like four wheels with a connection looking thing between them. That light along with the three amigos will come on depending on how you do it, but no matter what the CDL light should be on.

(EDIT: Sorry didnt see that there was two questions... I engaged mine manually with the truck in park, once the CDL was engaged I put it in the gear I wanted. You dont have to be in 4low to engage it.)
