Default ABS modulator/ 3 amigos

so i got those 3 friendly lights on my dash. im hearing that a new ABS modulator will fix that. what i need is a list of alternatives (preferably in order from cheapest to most expensive ) i have heard that i should start by hosing off the sensor (where do i find it and what do i wash off once i get there?) and then something about a valve that is cheap to replace? and what does it take to clear off the error codes after it is fixed? question - once it is fixed cant i just drive it the 300 or 400 miles necessary to reset the computer rather than pay the local dealership?

i think that is enough questions for one post so i will leave it to the brain trust.

thanks and keep your rover muddy!

i just searched an old post and it is more properly called a "SHUTTLE VALVE REPLACEMENT" .
cheapest place to pick up this part?
what are the odds that this is really my problem?

thanks again!
btw you guy and gals collectively do more to keep my beloved rover on the road and trail than all other sources combined!
now if i could just hit the lottery so i can afford all the extras i want to get for my baby...

You need to start by removing the wheels and doing a brake inspection, thin brake pads can cause the 3 amigos.

A bad wheel speed sensor can cause them.

A bad shuttle valve can cause them.

The wheel speed sensors are on the inside of the rotors, brake cleaner will clean them up nicely.
www.atlanticbritish.com for a shuttle valve repair kit, or www.roverlandparts.com for a used one.
If you buy the kit make sure that you buy the good one, $800.

Do not guess with the 3 Amigos, you will just be waisting your time and money.
Are your brakes squeaking? If you do a 30 MPH panic stop, do you hear or feel a ABS pulsation thru the brake pedal??

Get the codes read at the stealer, or an indy shop with a Testbook, Rovacom, Omnibook. The cheapo $80 shuttle repair kit isn't worth anything, you'll more than likely need the $800 repair kit, which is cheaper than a new modulator at $2000. Chances are there's a sensor that has gone bad too. I had the 3 amigos go off a ~6 different times over the course of about 8 months until the lights were on all the time. Get the codes read first though.

If you need new brakes go with the LR brand from AB. Cheaper pads produce more dust and fowl the sensors. Use a lot of anti-squeal on the back of the pads too.

Try this first..........

sit in car drivers door closed, start it,
then stop it, pull key out, wait a minute
open drivers door, put key back in,
close drivers door then restart car
.

Also, its a well documented fact that quite often, the shuttle valve kit does not fix the problem, This is because it throws the same code as the actual issue, however I found some pictures of a guy who DID find the issue. It was an intermittent light, and the shuttle valve code was being diagnosed. I know what I will do ifI get this issue....

Below is inside the ABS modulator and you can see there is no solder on these 2 connections, so a bumpy road or vibration etc will "break" the circuit and cause the Amigos to appear....

Some solder was added to the connections, fault now fixed

I lost all my bookmarks when I re-installed windows (was dumb and just didn't back them up), but there is a write-up of a "servicing" of the shuttle valve. It was by a Hummer guy. Turn out the H1's use the same shuttle valve/modulator as the D2's, except that the H1 modulators are even more $$. Anyways it has some great pics of the inner workings.

Found it.

ok my 3 amigos lights are constant companions -not intermintent. when i do a panic stop the brakes lock up - no ABS pulsation AT ALL. i havent looked at my brake pads lately but the light has been on since i bought the vehicle 15000 miles ago so i am prolly due for new pads/rotor anyway. what is the sit in vehicle, key sequence gonna do anyway? reset the sensor or some such?
btw no brake squeal either.

i notice that my hill descent control and traction control dont work either. im guessing this is because they utilize the ABS system?

thanks
