My money is on a slipped liner. Dealt with two of those now on two different rovers...

That noise haunts me. Sorry man...

What oil are you using? Have you checked oil pressure? Do you know what your coolant temps are?

Thin oil, low oil pressure, and running hot all appear to contribute to ticking sounds.

But Dang! Thats a pretty loud tick.

IF you really want to get rid of SOME of the noise, this will work:

1) put in a 180 degree thermostat. Will lower the engine temps and then less parts which are loose due to higher heat.

2) Radiator - maybe. If (1) does not help.

3) Put in thick regular OIL - like 20W-50W for the summer. The thick oil will pad the clearances for the lifters and increase oil pressure for everything else.

I am at 104,000 and my motor is fairly quiet.

you need to pull that puppy apart, no radiator or t-stat is going to help that noise.
are you running at least 15wt oil?

Im running Rotella T 15/40. No overheating, no engine light ever.

I havent checked oil pressure yet. As far as pulling the plugs one at a time, how exactly is that done, sounds like it would hurt the motor... And if I pull a plug and the noise goes away what does that mean?

Also if I was to check the oil pressure what info would it give me? Thanks

If you pull the plugs and the noise never goes away then you know your issue is not a slipped liner.

The oil pressure test will tell you if your oil pump has failed. That ticking you hear has also been related to a cracked oil pump gear.

Get live readings of engine temps with a scanner and post them here.

when I purchased my rover I noticed that after a long drive I was getting a nasty tick. after purchasing an ultra gauge I saw my problem, I was running 114 degrees. Water wetter, rotella 15-40, 180 stat, lucas oil additive, and mine runs quiet and about 185 degrees. so if you are running hot you could have a viscosity issue... may have nothing to do with your problem, but it is a viable solution if your problem is a viscosity issue.. if it is a lifter or a sleeve, then happy wrenching!
