Default Adding tow package?

Hi guys, new here. I was hoping someone may be able to answer a question I have as I am considering buying an 03 Discovery. It is an SE model without a hitch/receiver in back. I am assuming this means it does not have the tow package. However, I am not certain what is included in the tow package. Does it include an additional transmission cooler or anything else? Or is it just the wiring and the receiver?

Okay, so maybe I have two questions... The truck ran outstanding, but there was a very consistent ticking sound that you could hear under coming from under the hood, audible primarily at idle when standing near the front of the vehicle. Is there anything I should be concerned about with this? The truck has 92k miles.

Thanks so much for your responses,
Dave

2003's had an issue with the oil pump. Read the stickies at the top of this forum and it'll clue you in. My 03 is inside the range, but it's never given me a problem and it's up at 100k. This one may be fine, but I'd check the VIN and look into the problem before you purchase. You may be buying a ticking time bomb.

As far as the tow package, when you add the hitch, just splice in to the tail lights and don't buy that super expensive land rover kit.

The loud tick, especially after warm up, is can be a slipped cylinder liner(s), which can result from engine being over heated at one time. Please let someone else take on that problem. See www.statewidelist.com to search for Rover on craigslist in your state, output sorted by metro area. There are plenty of Rovers available. The external tranny cooler does come standard, and D2's under a certain VIN also had a second cooler for engine oil mounted above the tranny cooler. like a fence between the main radiator and the AC condenser.

As far as the oil pump issue goes, i was under the impression that its really just a problem with the dowel pins that are used to line up the gasket. So if you take the front cover off and pull those pins you should be good. Those pins were drilled in at the wrong angle and put pressure on the front cover which in turn puts strain on the oil pump gears causing them to crack and fail. Just make sure you line up the gasket correctly.

There is no "tow package", it came with a class 3 trailer hitch from the factory, all that was needed was a wire harness.
I prefer the plug-n-play wire harness, no cutting of wires that way.
Land Rover Trailer Wiring Kit (Same Fit As Genuine Part # HIL-734) - Order Land Rover Parts At RoverParts.com
As for the engine tick, just do a search for it on the forum, TONS of info on engine ticks.

Call, Paul Grant, at the number listed below in my signature section, he should have a good used hitch, then all you need, if he doesn't have it, is a wire harness convertor that plugs into the wire harness located in the r/rear panel under the tail light.

Well in my case, My 03 came fitted with a 5 Pin connector but Im having a nightmare finding an adapter to my 4 pin trailer I share with a couple friends who only have the 4 Pin... is there are good 5 to 4 pin adapter ideas? seems not to be common

I'm not sure if you need one. I think the only difference between the 5 and 4 is that the 5 has backup lights, usually to disable the trailer brakes to make it easier to back up hill. I think you can just plug the 4 pin trailer harness into the 5 pin vehicle harness.

Ill try again... the trailer pin seemed smaller than mine and it also broke on my buddies truck so ill be rewiring trailer anyway and will check it out... Thanks! so no wired voltage, then I could theoretially just make an adapter with a 5 and a 4 plug , solder it all up and shrink wrap it making it look nice!

Yep, you can make your own adapter if you want it to look pretty. I googled, and the first site that popped up with adapters didn't carry one, but instead linked to the two ends and suggested you make your own.
