advice for new owner `98 Disc I w/ 133k
Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this forum. I just bought a 1998 Disco I with 133,000 miles on it. The oil and trans fluid looks/smells pretty new. Any advice on what I should have done to this vehicle or be on the look-out for? Already have an issue with the driver's window :-)
Thanks!

If uncertain, change out all the fluids including the brakes, steering, coolant, diffs, t/case and tranny. I would suggest using Lucas tranny additive in the trannt as well as Lucas steering additive in the steering. Flush the engine before you next oil change.
Check the spark plugs and wires replacing the with Bosch Platium Plus 4's plugs and Magnacor 8mm wires.
At your mileage the O2 sensors should be replaced to remain some lost power and add a couple cans of gas additive in the fuel tank.
Lastly do an induction cleaning and clean the throttle body, then you are set and ready to go for the next 30,000 miles.

I have a 1998 Disc I. I live in Austin, so it's pretty hot here. Should I use 90W Gear Oil to deal with the heat?
Also, do I use the same oil for both the transfer case and differentials?
I've done the differential in a Honda Civic that I owned. There was a drain hole and a fill hole on the Honda. The drain hole is lower to let out the oil, then you put that plug back in, and fill it from the top hole until it starts to overflow. Is that the same case for the Discovery?

Hi AustinJeff, Welcome to LR ownership. I agree with everything that Mike says. You will probably want to consider using a synthetic motor oil as well. If you don't have a service manual, go by one. The T-case and diff. oils are different. Please check your owner's manual. If you don't have an owner's manual, I cancopy the pages out of mine and e-mail it to you (what is your e-mail address?). You can change all the fluids easily in a day by yourself.
