Default Aftermarket In Dash NAV/Carplay - comments wanted

I know many of you have installed aftermarket "screens" in the single DIN openings that our Discos have. A buddy of mine just bought a 2001 with 39k and his wife wants something for hands-free and NAV. I know there are dozens and dozens of threads on this topic but I though it might also be helpful for future readers if we had something a bit more concise. Would y'all mind posting what you have and what you like and/or don't like about it? This could save heaps of time in the quest. Pics or links would be helpful but of course model numbers can be googled as well. TIA.

I recently upgraded my radio to a Boss unit with Apple car play and reverse camera. Works great.

the only change I’d make is purchase the Boss unit with Bluetooth capable Apple car play. Mine requires the cable be plugged in the phone for car play.

Great tip, thanks! I like the Boss line but prefer to keep the display screen between the vents. As far as I’ve been able to determine, the units with the 8” screen are not Bluetooth NAV/Music capable and require the cable. It seems the 9” is the first version to have this. I may be out of luck trying to find a 7” with no cable required.

Default Check with Crutchfield

I'm planning on replacing mine with Carplay/Android Auto and will be going through Crutchfield when I do. I went on their site and they have several options available with adapter harnesses and some which can incorporate things like the stock cd changers.

That’s where I was looking, they carry most of the Boss line. And while I don’t mind doing the wiring adaptations myself, for the $25 they charge it’s kind of a no brainer to get the thing mostly plug and play out of the box. I have to give them credit for that convenience.

I got the same unit as boosted above. I wanted the fold out screen version from pioneer but during COVID they were not in stock. I have the HSE with the higher end audio with nav radio. The instructions from Crutchfield were not accurate. I had to print out the wireing diagrams from the RAVE to get all the connections working. It’s a good head unit but my biggest complaint is that it blocks a lot of the controls for HVAC. The functionality of the unit works well though, CarPlay, radio, USB and hand free calls.

I had the Boss 7" HU installed and everything functioned decently but after ~1yr the HU started giving nasty feedback/popping when switching FM radio stations. After troubleshooting the issue a few different times I finally decided to swap for the Pioneer MVH-MS512BS and I've had no further issues with the sound quality. One thing I really like about the Pioneer HU is that its backlit similar to the factory Alpine radio so its more visible in bright sunlight and less distracting at night than a large screen.

I also used this tutorial to engineer a magsafe phone mount so I can have Gaia, Maps, Ultragauge, etc easily visible on the dash.

The main thing that I miss is the backup camera but I'm working on replacing that functionality with a mirror that has a backup camera screen.

I have a Pioneer 3500NEX single-DIN with the 7" flip screen. Bluetooth and Carplay. Carplay works with map navigation (eg, Google Map, Apple Map, Gaia map for offroading). Also set up with a rear camera that is mounted on the rear license plate.

That's a nice looking unit. Anyone have an issues with the backup camera mounted to the license plate, which of course is off center for us. I can see some evidence in the pic above but it doesn't look terrible.
