Newbie here and I did try to search, but maybe wasn't using the right key phrase. I am the new owner of a 2004 D2 that spent its first 10 years in New Mexico and the dash has the common curling. I was at my local pick n pull today and they have a pre facelift D2 in the yard with what looks like a decent dash. Would this be a direct swap into my 2004? It looks the same but wanted to make sure before I go through the trouble of pulling it out. I will use the 2004 cluster and everything else for compatibility reasons. I even found the radio release "shims" in the center console but have read it is still a pain to remove.
That and my 2004 dash is black, and the pick n pull dash is tan. An easy change with a good cleaning and some SEM ColorCoat.
Probably should have said when. Didn’t mean to make you nervous. I poked around on the forum and found a post where the guy said it took him a few hours but who knows what his experience was. Another mentioned following the procedure in the RAVE which is always a great starting point. Congrats on finding a good donor dash, it’s certainly worth how ever long it takes.
- Remove of airbag and steering wheel. Even if not necessary it will give more room.
- Removal of clock
- Removal of hill decent button group
- Removal of radio
- Removal of climate control unit
- Removal of the center trim surround
- Removal of instrument cluster trim and the cluster itself
- Removal of shifter console/surround
I didn't find much video wise on the exact steps to remove the dash itself, but I am sure I can figure it out. Other than a #10 Torx to remove the airbag, a 19mm socket to remove the steering wheel, two thin cards to remove the clock and hill decent button group/clock and the two thin metal shims to remove the radio there doesn't seem to be any other special tools required.
94-04 D1/D2 dashes are identical with the exception of color. I have installed 04 black dashes in D1's and used the lower Bahama beige panel/glove box to give it a 95 RRC soft dash look. I have even installed a D2 steering wheel in my XD and just re-pinned the controls for the cc/horn. Airbag is connected and zero SRS faults. A ton of stuff between a RRC/D1/D2 can be mixed and matched.
Found your thread on the repair kit. Mine is also curling by the coin tray and this kit won't fix that issue.
The dash at my local pick n pull will only cost me $75.00 and that will include the radio, climate control, unit, all the other switches, trim, etc... So, I can't pass it up.
