I've always wondered what is involved with rebuilding a LR alternator. I believe I have read posts by those who have done it.

Default Bosch alternator

Would anyone care to comment on the Bosch-brand alternators? I found a dealer that sells them for $225, suposedly new

in most areas there is an Auto Electric shop that rebuilds alternators and starters. I have found this to be the best way of getting something rebuilt.

most of these shops have been around forever and they really know what they are doing.

As long as it has a lifetime warranty.

They are generally junk.
I am on my third one in alittle over a year.
I got a rebuilt Marelli that looked identical to original LR Marelli. Is there a difference between them?

most of the time you can get away with a new regulator and some brushes.

unless diodes etc have gone bust, its pretty easy peasy

Rebuilding an Alt is easy, and usually quick and cheap. You can order the parts online, or, some local electrical alternator/starter rebuild places will sell you the parts (many won't, so call ahead). Nine times out of ten you just need new brushes. A brush holder kit for the D1 if I recall is about $15-$20. (for most chevy/Ford alternators they are like $3). If the rotor (comutator) needs to be lathed trued up a shop can do it, or you could put it in a drill press and use a file to straighten the part where the brushes ride. I don't always replace the bearings as the new chinese bearings are not usually as good as the origional. A lot of times you can pop the seals off and clean/check/repack. National Automotive out of Shelbyville, IN sells a bunch of starter alternator parts about as cheap as anyone. They aren't really an internet shop, mostly catalog (call them with you alternator numbers in hand). They are really good to deal with.

Well when they rebuild a alternator they use the old case and any parts that are still good, clean them up and replace whats bad and send it on its way.
My first 2 rebuilt alternators from AutoZone were both Marelli cases and both went bad in less than 5,000 miles.
Just stopped charging.
Now I am on my third alt and it is from Advance Auto and it has no brand name on it.
I am going to buy a used one and keep it on the shelf in the garage and when my "new" one goes bad I will return it, get my money back and throw in the used one.

Unhappy Used alternator, got the wrong year, PLEASE comment!

The used alternator arrived today, it is in good condition.

But I ordered a 2001 alternator and they sent me a 2000 one.

I think it should be ok because the same part# was used for both 2000 & '01.

Can someone confirm this???
