Default Alternator Question

Today I am heading home from work. I lose my RPM, the engine shuts down, my radio goes off, and I lose power steering. I pull off onto a side road and raise the hood. My serpentine belt is fine. I sit on the side of the road waiting on some assistance from my dad, he lives about 5 minutes away. After trying to start a couple of times the Disco starts...like nothing has happened.

I stop at an Advance Auto just down the road from me. They say my battery is good. He says my alternator is the right voltage, but I only have about 2 amps...maximum (should be 130). Time for a new alternator.

Advance quotes me $255 + tax

Roverparts has this one:
http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/ERR6413.cfm
It is $500

Roverland has this one:
http://www.roverlandparts.com/1999-2...lternator.aspx
It is $225.

Now for my questions:
1. Why such a difference in the roverparts and roverland alternators?
2. Am I better off buying from Roverland or Advance?
3. Also, yesterday, I has the flashing S and M lights....would this be related to my alternator issues? I know they are supposed to be tranny electrical related.

Thanks in advance for answering these.

It is an 02 Disco II

Went to move the Disco to another location until I got my alternator.

Now it won't start at all...it turns over just fine but will not start....is all this related?

Main difference is that AB (roverparts) is new and Roverland is used but guaranteed. Roverland dismantles low mileage wrecks, typically 60k or less - they can even tell you the year and how many miles on the one that you order.

I have had very good service from Roverland buying parts for several different vehicles, both Discovery and Range Rover Classics, and both electrical and body.

If your alternator is pushing no amps, I would suspect that the vehicle would not want to start.

I have spoken with many people who have tried rebuilt alternators from Auto zone, many of whom went thru 3 or 4 before giving up.
Consider , http://www.roverconnection.com/ for the best price on a couple of new alternators for D2's.

Your Advanced AUto Parts alternator will go bad in no time flat, my AutoZone one went bad after 5,000 miles.
The one at Atlantic Brtitish is a brand new one, LR alternators are water proof and that is one of the reasons they are so expensive.
www.autosportsunlimited.com sells used ones for cheap, buy one with your next pay check and then when the one from Advanced Auto goes bad return it for a refund.

From your symptom description: "After trying to start a couple of times the Disco starts...like nothing has happened. "

Three questions:
[ol][*]Did the alternator light come on after it started on your way to advance auto parts.?[*]Do you have spark at the spark plugs?[*]Do you have fuel pressure (Is the pump turning on when you crank the engine?[/ol]I doubt it is your alternator. When alternators go out, the light turns on and the battery goes into drain mode. You can still drive and start the engine a time or two depending on your battery CCA and condition.

Advance Auto is a good place to buy things like wiper fluid and smelly things to keep the wifey happy. Never buy electrical components from them. If you want to use generic instead of Brand Name go to NAPA, if they don't have it reread Spike 555's post.

I was told something may need to be reset. Supposedly it will reset by locking and unlocking with my remote keyless entry. Only thing, I don't have a keyless entry...just a key.

There is no spark. It is like something has been shut off.
